When Chennai dried up Chennai suffered one of its worst droughts summer of 2019. With a deficit in rainfall, groundwater levels sinking, and the dry beds in the major reservoirs showing up, it became one of the first Indian cities to run dry. Chennai Metrowater tapped every possible source, including agricultural wells and abandoned quarries, even water from Jolarpet, Vellore, through train.
