The Wall Street Journal reports that Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer said in an earnings call that they have a new deal with Oracle that when someone installs a Java update, it will prompt the user to switch their default search engine to Yahoo Search. Starting this month, users who install or update Oracle’s Java software will be prompted to make Yahoo their browser’s default search engine and home page.This is what the prompt looks like:Java installs have done this forever, it feels deceptive and unethical but it works for market share. Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, announced on Tumblr that they have renewed and extended their deal with Microsoft on their search front.In short, Bing will still power much of Yahoo Search but Yahoo does gain more control. Instead of Bing powering almost all of the ads on Yahoo Search desktop, now Yahoo only has to show Bing Ads on 51% of those searches.Danny Sullivan has an excellent FAQ on the deal. Over the weekend, news broke that Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, has started initiatives to get Yahoo back into building its own search technology.As you may remember, Yahoo did have their own search technology until they gave up a few years ago. It was a sad day for the industry when they handed over their keys to search to Microsoft.
