How to completely dominate Google’s first page
MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA MINE ALL MINE!!! See that’s the thing about SEO, it doesn’t matter how doggedly you optimise every element of your site, making it as easy as possible for Google to crawl every page nor does it matter that you’re creating top-notch content on a regular basis, because there will always be competition from someone else trying to ruin your plans for total global SERP domination. Those spoilsports. Of course in a normal world this is entirely fair. Competition is healthy, users deserve a choice, monopolies are bad. But this isn’t the normal world; this is the world of SEO megalomania gone unchecked, so with that in mind let’s see how a selfish greedy company can take over the first SERP using every channel or tool available. But first some caveats… There’s no guarantee that any of this will be successful. Google is trying to make the experience as beneficial to the user as possible, so plastering the SERP with links to your site … [Read more...] about How to completely dominate Google’s first page
Search Marketing for Retail – SMX-London
Last week I attended and presented at SMX-London. It was a great chance to meet with British search Marketers that don't get to make it out to the US conferences, and to hear a different perspective on familiar topics from mostly British presenters. Friday saw the "Search Marketing for Retail" seminar, which was moderated by Rob Kerry of Ayima.com. The first presenter to hit the stage was Finlay Clark of BigMouthMedia who gave an overview on the topic starting with the challenges online retailers face. The first challenge was in protecting the brand. Make sure that you use the NOODP tag if you're listed in the ODP (DMOZ), as it's likely that your description over there does not contain a strong call to action. If you have affiliates, remember that they are going to be directly competing with you online for your brand, don't let them get in there first, or allow them to get ahead of you. Finally, think about the impact that universal/blended search is having on the SERPs, think … [Read more...] about Search Marketing for Retail – SMX-London
Local SEO: Key challenges and tips from #ClickZChat
In previous ClickZChat sessions we’ve largely covered content and platforms, but seeing as it’s a Twitter event held by both ClickZ AND Search Engine Watch, it seemed only right that we spend some time looking at search in more depth. This week we took to Twitter for an hour to ask our followers for their local SEO challenges and solutions. Here’s everything we learned: Question 1: What are the biggest challenges you face when optimizing for local search? SPAM Several users (including me) mentioned spam being a much bigger issue for local ranking, with maps being particularly open to abuse, and Search Engines slower to act on this than in other cases: Citations Many people also felt that citations were a hassle for a variety of reasons. Resources Indeed, the issue of keeping up to date was seen as a major challenge. Data is often fragmented and many organisations with several locations do not have the time or resources to roll out best practice – or … [Read more...] about Local SEO: Key challenges and tips from #ClickZChat
SEO basics: 22 essentials you need for optimizing your site
Here we’ll take a look at the basic things you need to know in regards to search engine optimisation, a discipline that everyone in your organisation should at least be aware of, if not have a decent technical understanding. One of our most popular articles of all time is a post entitled SEO Basics: 8 Essentials When Optimizing Your Site. It still does the business for us in terms of traffic, however it was first published in April 2013, so you can treat this as its long overdue and expanded update. What is SEO? Quite simply, SEO is the umbrella term for all the methods you can use to ensure the visibility of your website and its content on search engine results pages (SERPs). The methods vary from technical practices you can achieve behind the scenes on your website (we tend to refer to this as ‘on-page SEO’) to all the promotional ’off-page’ approaches you can use to raise your site’s visibility (link-building, social media marketing). For the … [Read more...] about SEO basics: 22 essentials you need for optimizing your site
