Adidas, Nike & Auditing hreflangs For Explosive SEO Results

Fierce competitors Nike & Adidas make for a compelling study of differing approaches to internationalizing your website… and salutary lessons in what can go wrong for even the biggest brands’ international SEO campaigns. Fundamentally, there are two domain architectures to consider for your international brand: a single top-level domain (TLD) or multiple TLDs (e.g., .com, .co.uk, .fr, .de, etc.). In theory, both are equally valid options and can deliver exactly the same level of SEO benefit. In practice, the two options have wildly different risks and challenges that should be considered when choosing an international structure (and when auditing your international SEO technical platform). Nike has taken the single TLD approach, hosting all of their multinational content on the nike.com domain and generally redirecting the various local TLDs to that domain: (Unfortunately, not all nike.[TLD] variations fit so easily into that pattern. See nike.co.uk, which redirects to … [Read more...] about Adidas, Nike & Auditing hreflangs For Explosive SEO Results

Your English Might Not Speak To Europeans

In my last post here I gave some tips on which events you could go and visit in Europe. One of the sentences I used was “The SES circus opens its tents in London.” After that post I got an e-mail from someone asking whether I meant that in a positive or a negative way. A “circus” in the US apparently isn’t always a positive thing. Over here in Europe it is. When a circus is in town everybody is happy. It’s a show which travels around and makes people happy, hence the analogy I chose. The e-mail got me thinking, however, about the differences between Europe and the US and what I have been writing about here during the past one and a half years. There are more of these differences in language which make it hard for Europeans and US-based SEOs to work in each others areas. Let’s take a closer look at three languages which you have to be careful with. English: UK English Vs. US English The first and most obvious one is the difference between UK … [Read more...] about Your English Might Not Speak To Europeans

Expand Your App’s Reach By Teaching It A New Language

With a population of over 300 million people, and over 100 million smartphones sold, it’s easy to see why the United States is the first target for most software developers — app developers included. More than half of the smartphones sold in the United States are Android phones. That number has been steadily rising since December 2009, as you can see on this chart from Eric S. Raymond based on data from ComScore. And there’s no reason to believe that the trend is tapering off. As breaking into the English-speaking market gets harder and harder, there are abundant reasons to translate apps into other languages. One of the most obvious reasons is the “big fish in a small pond” situation. The English-speaking app market is saturated. App discovery is getting harder by the day. Other languages are still somewhat more open. The AppsGeyser team has been researching where to begin localization efforts and following are some of our findings. Consider Chinese … [Read more...] about Expand Your App’s Reach By Teaching It A New Language

Father’s Day 2017 Google doodle brings back the cactus family from Mother’s Day

To celebrate Father’s Day, today’s Google doodle revisits artwork from this year’s May 14 Mother’s Day doodle — only this, time it’s the cactus family’s dad taking care of his baby cacti. Google’s Father’s Day doodle includes five panels, the first with only the father-figure cactus standing tall. Other images depict the dad-cactus doing his child’s hair, blowing a balloon back and forth, giving the kids a bath, and showing them how to shave. The doodle leads to a search for “Father’s Day 2017” and includes the usual sharing icon. Currently, it’s being displayed on Google’s US home page, in addition to a number of its international pages, including the UK, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, the Netherlands, India, Japan and more. In case you missed it, here’s Google’s Mother’s Day doodle to compare: Some of the hardest-working dads I know are part of the Search Engine Land team, … [Read more...] about Father’s Day 2017 Google doodle brings back the cactus family from Mother’s Day

Profit Meets Purpose: 5 Companies That Give Back

More than half of consumers worldwide are willing to pay more for products and services from brands that are committed to making a positive social or environmental impact, according to a global survey conducted by Nielsen, which is why giving back is no longer just a non-profit business model. Similarly, BDC-Ipsos released a survey that found that 60% of Canadian shoppers were willing to pay an additional 5% for products and services that were considered ethical. The same survey also reported that consumers would stop purchasing from a company with irresponsible business practices; and I don’t think the results are simply because us Canadians are so nice, eh. These surveys were discussing exactly the types of for-profit/for-change hybrid businesses that this article is focusing on. The new super-breed of business, a hybrid between profit and purpose. Welcome to socially-responsible for-profit businesses that have had “change the world” written in their business plan … [Read more...] about Profit Meets Purpose: 5 Companies That Give Back
