Google announced yesterday that both restaurants and their customers can add popular dishes to their Google local panel results. Google also said machine learning can help, "The popular dishes feature is powered by a machine learning algorithm that matches dish names, provided by Google Maps users, with relevant photos and reviews. The owners of Botto Italian Pizza Bistro are a little…straightforward. Look no further than their FAQ page, which is either a brilliant marketing prank or a very deliberate warning to would-be customers: “Do you have ice? No. Why? Because that’s the way, uh huh uh huh, we like it.” It’s this level of anti-service that defines Botto, which could potentially become a thorn in the side of Yelp. Botto’s Rebuttal Botto is waging a campaign to become the worst-reviewed restaurant on Yelp, which they say is a way to get back at the review aggregator. The managers of Botto, David Cerretini and Michele Massimo, believe Yelp has virtually no bearing over the success of their restaurant. Seattle based GeekWire has written several articles about OrderAhead‘s fake restaurant listings SEO strategy, which has been turned back by Google. The company used dubious or unethical tactics to gain SEO advantage, creating fake restaurant sites and claiming Google+ pages to outrank and deceive both search engines and consumers. On one level this is just the latest in a long line of hijacking stories. However it’s especially egregious in some respects. As explained by GeekWire: The OrderAhead sites started appearing about a month ago, using web addresses that made them seem to be official restaurant sites. The OrderAhead sites frequently appeared above the official restaurant websites in search results, siphoning web traffic away from actual restaurant sites. In many cases, Google Business listings were also registered and linked to the OrderAhead sites, without the knowledge of the restaurant owner, violating Google’s terms of service. A French court has ordered a blogger to pay a substantial fine and change the title of a restaurant review because the review was too prominent in search results and harmed business at the restaurant. The post has since been removed but can be viewed here (via TechDirt). The restaurant, Il Giardino, complained to the court that the critical review had hurt its business. The blogger, Caroline Doudet, had something of a following (3,000) for her blog called “Cultur’elle.” This is what enabled the review to rank. According to the BBC, citing court documents, “the review appeared fourth in the results of a Google search for the restaurant.” The original title of the review was “The place to avoid in Cap-Ferret: Il Giardino.” The court in Bordeaux ordered the title of the review changed to simply “”the place to avoid” to diminish its prominence in Google results as well as its impact on the restaurant.
