That being said, there is some movement toward social, and it offers an exciting glimpse of what’s coming. For one, consumers will have personal and ongoing relationships with hospitals, which will, in turn, become online resources for their communities. Social media will also become a valuable source of data for those companies that know how to listen to it. These industries are now finding innovative ways to not only reach their communities virtually, but to serve them there as well. Beyond the bedside Take a look at the Twitter feeds for Mercy Health System and the Mayo Clinic (plus its other handles, covering everything from sports medicine to neurology) and you’ll get a sense of what’s possible. Both create content and distribute it across social media, their own blogs and beyond. Mercy has built a Twitter presence that disseminates information on everything from cauliflower rice to yoga for teens. Mayo does the same, but goes even further — posting its own … [Read more...] about Tips for health care marketers in 2017

Google Health Readies For Launch, In Test With Cleveland Clinic
The very long awaited Google Health may be about to launch. The New York Times and CNN have reports this morning that Google and the Cleveland Clinic are announcing a pilot program that reportedly will involve the creation of personal health profiles on Google for anywhere between 1,500 and 10,000 patients. These profiles will include health histories and other personal medical data. Microsoft has a similar initiative underway with Health Vault, as does Steve Case’s Revolution Health. There are also other companies that offer personal health record storage and services online. The idea of a single data repository for personal health information that can be managed online and shared with selected providers is a great concept. But at the center of this concept are the issues of consumer privacy and data security. Talk to any of the third parties here — Google, Microsoft, Revolution Health — and you will likely hear statements that data are/will be secure and that … [Read more...] about Google Health Readies For Launch, In Test With Cleveland Clinic
Electronic Health Records Initiative Faces Significant Obstacles
When the long rumored Google Health was announced in early 2008, it appeared to be a very ambitious initiative that had a mountain to climb. That mountain was participation: getting individuals, doctors and hospitals to digitize their records. Then there are the myriad privacy and data security issues. But Google isn’t the only one in the electronic health records and “health search” game. So is Microsoft. There are scores of others in the segment, as well as billions spent annually in advertising. Despite the money and involvement of companies like Microsoft and Google, digitizing the nation’s health records and getting millions of people to use online tools to manage their health histories seemed an almost insurmountable goal in early 2008. Then came the election of Barack Obama. As part of its economic recovery program, the Obama Administration has proposed a multi-billion dollar effort to upgrade the US health care system by making all health records … [Read more...] about Electronic Health Records Initiative Faces Significant Obstacles
Using An Unbranded Health Site
Recently, I had an amazing experience. I was invited to be a part of an all agency partner meeting. Throughout the day, we talked about various initiatives to ensure that the right partners collaborated on each to maximize the brand’s marketing dollars. However, we did something else that was far more valuable. We listened. This was an amazing experience for me because despite having attended many ePatient conferences over the years, this was the first time I had a seat at the table to not only hear the patient story, but also ask questions about their journey and day to day life. This experience reminded me of just how important it is for patients, care givers, HCPs, and the pharmaceutical industry in general, to have an unbranded website. It is an opportunity to get around all the limitations of what you can and cannot include on your brand site, and get back to basics. In short, it allows you to provide patients and caregivers with the kind of information they are truly … [Read more...] about Using An Unbranded Health Site
Google Broad Core Updates And Why Some Health Sites Affected
Google’s John Mueller has stated that Google’s broad core updates have not been targeting health sites. But there is a perception that some health related sites tend to be sensitive to Google updates. What kinds of changes can affect health sites while not specifically targeting health sites?User Satisfaction MetricsGoogle has a long history of using their log files to help deduce what kinds of web pages satisfy users for certain kinds of search queries. Factors like click through rate were used in the past for quality control, for understanding what users want.Rank Brain and Neural MatchingOver the past few years Google introduced Neural Matching and Rank Brain to help Google better understand search queries (neural matching) and to help Google understand web pages better by matching pages to concepts (rank brain). In my opinion, a better understanding of what users mean when they ask a query could affect health related sites. Health topics can be divided between strictly … [Read more...] about Google Broad Core Updates And Why Some Health Sites Affected
