Most Popular Topic of the Day: Beyonce vs. The Blackout According to the (sadly now significantly scaled back) Google Trends, the popular topic of of Super Bowl Sunday was Beyonce, with over one million searches. Yahoo also found Beyonce to be popular, as related searches spiked 7236% (and searches for Destiny’s Child rose 4000%). But according to Yahoo, the big winner of the day was the blackout, as viewers turned to their devices to ask [why did the lights go out], [superdome power outage] and [what caused power outage]. It may have taken just four minutes for someone to advertise on related terms of Twitter, but did anyone but the terms on Google? Yahoo announced new content, new ad units and new partnerships as it ushered out its stars at the Digital NewFronts this evening. CEO Marissa Mayer kicked off the presentation by highlighting the four areas of growth the company is concentrating on: mobile, social, native and, of course, video. Appealing to the media buyers in the audience before rolling out the company’s latest offerings, CMO Kathy Savitt, said Yahoo is the partner that connects advertisers with users at scale across devices and platforms. Yahoo’s video content pillars are Yahoo Originals, Live, Digital Magazines and Premium content. There were appearances by Katie Couric, Global News Anchor for Yahoo News, Yahoo’s digital magazine editors Bobbi Brown, Joe Zee, Paula Foelich and Josh Wolk, as well as Jets head coach Rex Ryan among others. I was taking Google Glass to its first rock concert, and I was going to shoot some photos and videos with it. I knew the photos would be fine, but I expected the videos to be a disaster. Actually, I was worried about the audio more than anything. Here’s why: About a week before the concert, I shot my first Glass video on a bike ride near my house. If you watch that video, it sounds like I’m in the middle of a major catastrophic weather event. It was windy, but not that bad. So, at the concert, I assumed the loud music would overwhelm Glass’ tiny microphone and leave me with something that sounded like a chainsaw trying to cut through iron. I was wrong. Glass blew me away. I shot two videos at a concert by The Boxer Rebellion last weekend in Portland. Screen related searches are the backbone of Yahoo!’s year in review lists, as actors, actresses, talk show personalities and reality TV celebrities seem to command a bigger presence year after year. In the most popular TV searches on Yahoo! in the US, perennial favorite American Idol dominated top slots in several categories of Yahoo’s top search trends for 2012. Interestingly, singer/actress and former American Idol judge J-LO, was the only music personality to appear in the top 10, no mention of fellow exiting co-star, Steven Tyler, though searches for “aerosmith tour” did spike on Yahoo in 2012. T-minus just days until Google flips the switch on AdWords Enhanced Campaigns.
