Google’s recent quarterly financial statements sounded pretty rosy overall. Many have much to celebrate in the figures. Stockbrokers and city analysts were much more worried about Google’s cunning share split. I haven’t seen a single commentator consider the US versus the rest of the world. Well, here it is! Let’s take the raw sales performance first. Below is a chart which looks at the rate of growth of the US, UK and then the rest of the world. You can see that the dramatic peak of two quarters ago (mainly from the international markets) has disappeared and things have returned to steady growth rates around the 30% year on year level. A 30% growth rate is great in anyone’s book — but we tend to forget that this isn’t just a Google figure, this is a reflection of growth in the market as traditional forms of advertising fade on the vine and online takes off. Google has done a lot to help it along, but the market has generally been going … [Read more...] about Does Booming International Search Mask A Google Decline?

Aug 17, 2018 by Shanti Shunn Search Engine Optimization, Search News Vizion Interactive By now I’m sure you have heard that Chrome 68 has been released and if you have not, you need to make sure your Chrome version is up-to-date. While a browser update may not seem like the most newsworthy, this is the version that will start to visually penalize sites not using proper HTTPS or that have mixed content. Google’s Chrome has been more specifically putting emphasis on whether a site is secure or not, but Chrome 68 is the version identified by Google that puts even more emphasis on security issues for websites visited via the Chrome browser. While Chrome 68 is still the interim browser between the total distrust of Symantec SSL certificates, it is a move in that direction between Chrome 66 and Chrome 70. While many people are commenting that this just seems like an undue burden on site operators, it should come as no surprise as Google has always been … [Read more...] about Chrome 68 Released: What It Means For SEOs and Site Operators
Apple’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention 2.1 (ITP2.1) limits the length of client side cookies to seven days. In short this means a Safari user that visits your site today will be viewed as a new/separate user if they don’t directly interact with your site within the next seven days. On February 21, 2019 WebKit (the web browser engine that powers Safari, Mail, App Store and more) announced the next iteration of Intelligent Tracking Prevention with iteration 2.1 or ITP2.1. The largest and most impactful change in IPT2.1 is to client side cookies, which will now be capped to seven days. From WebKit’s announcement: “With ITP 2.1, all persistent client-side cookies, i.e. persistent cookies created through document.cookie, are capped to a seven day expiry.” In layman’s terms, this means a user visiting your site with Safari today will be viewed as a new/separate user eight days from now if they don’t directly interact with your site during that … [Read more...] about What is ITP2.1 & What Does It Mean for Digital Marketing?
It’s hard to meet anyone in the digital industry who hasn’t heard about RankBrain. And it comes as no surprise that this system along with its impact on search results raises endless questions and disputes. We’ve made an attempt to understand the way RankBrain operates and if there’s anything we can possibly do to optimize for it. Let’s start from the very beginning. What is RankBrain? RankBrain is a machine-learning system developed by Google to help improve search results and to interpret brand new queries that haven’t been previously searched for. Some experts consider it to be part of the Hummingbird search algorithm, which was launched to help Google better understand the meaning of the entire query behind exact keywords. The first official statement about RankBrain was made by Google senior research scientist Greg Corrado on October 26, 2015. Here’s how Greg explained the operating principle of the algorithm: “If you’re … [Read more...] about How does RankBrain work and what does it mean for search marketers?
