One of the questions I hate being asked is how long it’s going to take to rank in some situation or another. How long until you’re in the top 10? How long until your local page has a carousel result? How long until you show up in the local block? The answer is: it depends. It depends on a million factors, many of which will vary highly from business to business. It might take one business a week to rank, and it might be an easy score in two days for another. A third might find it an uphill battle for months. It all depends on how well you follow advice, how much clout your site has to begin with, if you have any lingering penalties, and what outside influence you can bring to bear.As you might have guessed from the title, today I’m going to address Google Places, which is their local search. In order to rank in local search results with your Google Places page, you’re going to need to follow a bunch of specific steps to establish yourself.Meet the RequirementsThe … [Read more...] about How Long Does it Take to Rank in Google Places?

The real estate industry has a bad rap in the upper levels of search marketing. We deplore the SEM agencies that sell ineffective and/or shady tactics to the real estate industry. We criticize the agents and brokers who are victimized by their own ignorance or indifference. I’ve called real estate SEO a “joke,” and it’s hard to argue the point when you see real estate professionals paying good money for bad SEO. But it’s a mistake to paint all real estate professionals with such broad strokes. There’s a new wave of real estate agents and agencies that are adopting the latest online (and offline) marketing techniques to sell themselves to local home buyers and sellers. Blogging and social media marketing are the new tools of the trade for creative real estate agents. This month’s small business marketing success story is one of those agents. Meet Teresa Boardman, a real estate agent and broker in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her success at using the … [Read more...] about Teresa Boardman, Real Estate Agent
MLS, Zillow, Trulia, Realtor.com, Craigslist, fellow real estate listings sites, newspapers and other classified ad providers … please meet your new neighbor: Google.com. Google has expanded its real estate listings and added extra search functionality for users to find property listings in Google Maps. A Google Maps search for “seattle real estate” looks mostly like it always has — listings of real estate agents and brokers on a map. But right below the search box is a hard-to-miss invitation to search current real estate listings. And the result, at least in this Seattle example, looks impressive: What you’re seeing is an updated and more comprehensive version of the real estate listings that Google Maps has shown before, along with a new search tool. The results are coming directly from real estate brokerages and agents, many of whom upload listings into Google Base as part of their online marketing. Google is also getting listings from sources such … [Read more...] about Google Expands Real Estate Listings
There you are. A big redesign or CMS migration is looming, and you’re ready to unleash a crawl on the new site in a test environment. You fire up your favorite crawling tool and trigger the crawl… and it lasts all of three seconds. Yes, there’s an obvious problem. The staging server is protected and behind some type of security measure that inhibits you from freely crawling it. Sweat begins to form on your brow as you wonder how you will get the crawl completed. At this point, you could choose to manually check all the pages, but you might end up in a padded room whispering something about header response codes taking over the world. Or you could continue to click “crawl” and repeatedly crawl a login page, but that won’t help either. OR you could snap out of it and figure out a way to crawl the site in staging, which would enable you to analyze the crawl data and save SEO. Yes, that’s the ticket. Some of you might be saying, “Hey, this … [Read more...] about 5 Ways To Crawl A Staging Server Before Important Site Changes Go Live (To Save SEO)
In the real estate business, it is common to use long tail keywords in SEO and AdWords campaign optimization. But it says a lot when a real estate portal website manages to be among the top five in their search category with head keywords in less than a year. It’s not hard to invest a lot of money in AdWords, if you have deep pockets, but to manage a move like that with a balanced visibility of paid and organic is tricky in any industry. Boligportal.dk, a real estate portal in Denmark, has managed to move into the Homes & Apartments For Sale category, ranking #7 organically, and #2 in paid visibility in a mere 11 months. Hanne Hasseriis Gormsen, Online Marketing Manager at Boligportal.dk, tells us about their journey and how competitive intelligence plays a big role in their success: “Boligportal.dk is 15 years old and for a long period it has been possible to sell properties from within our portal, but in June last year, we re-launched this section of the site and are … [Read more...] about Taking Control of the Search Market with Competitive Intelligence
