Why would I care about how some one feels when they visit a web site? What benefit is there to having any type of emotional reaction to one? For starters, there is only so much search engine optimization anyone can do to promote a web site. Conversions don’t miraculously happen because a site has a PR score of 8, no matter how much money you spent to get a link from there. Even an investment in user testing is not a magic pill for persuasive design. Those users can help you fix all the confusing and broken parts but were they motivated to recommend it? What I believe is missing from the SEO perspective’s intepretation of information architecture is the user perspective. Keyword research tools are one way of getting information about potential site visitors. Web analytics data also provides valuable feedback. However, information architects create website information architectures early in the design process. They create website architectures before wireframes and prototypes are even created. Information architects test their labels, categorization, and groupings on actual users, getting direct face-to-face contact. While testing a web site recently for a young adult rehabilitation center, I was pleased to find their content was written in a warm, caring way. The colors were soothing pastels.
