Whenever I’ve trained link builders, I’ve been consistent about one major process over the last decade: throw them in and let them learn by doing it, screwing up and finding their own way. I always tell them to expect to make mistakes, and they always do — some worse than others. But making mistakes is, in my opinion, the best learning experience. I still make stupid mistakes myself, and I expect I’ll make many more. In this article, I’m going to cover the most egregious mistakes that I can remember any of us making. Enjoy the opportunity to learn from our missteps! Whether you’re trying to get a guest post up or just get a link, look and see if that’s even a possibility. Many sites specifically say they do not want to be contacted for guest posts, they do not offer text links, they do not use outside authors and so on. You can find this information in various places, but if you don’t see it in an obvious place (like the About … [Read more...] about Why mistakes make you a better link builder
My friends, I'm here today to speak on behalf of that often sadly-neglected frontier in link-building: internal links. That's right, friends, your site's own navigation. But while they're complaining about the difficulties of getting "good links", they neglect the potential of their own internal navigation. You know, the links over which you have … [Read more...] about Go Link Yourself!

For ages, Google has encouraged people to build links in order to rank well. But in the wake of the Google Penguin Update, it’s become painfully clear to me how many people have failed to understand the inherent quality links part of that link building message. Consider this a wake-up call. Yes, you want links, but links that are hard to get, that take effort to obtain, that you’ve somehow earned, not “easy links.” Yesterday, at our SMX Advanced show, I went on a rant about this. All my frustration recently that so many seem so confused just bubbled out. You can listen to that below, if you like (the picture isn’t of me but rather Jeremy Bencken, who recorded my rant): Consider this article the tamer, more coherent version of my rant. You Want Links Meant For Humans, Not Google A comment last … [Read more...] about Link Building Means Earning “Hard Links” Not “Easy Links”
