The UK’s Conservative Party has a new co-chair, The Right Honourable Grant Shapps, Member of Parliament for Welwyn Hatfield. Honorable except with Google, which considers the business he apparently founded to be pushing a tool designed to spam its search engine and fill its listings with rubbish. According to The Guardian, Shapps founded HowToCorp in 2005, a site that, among other products, pitches the TrafficPaymaster software. The software apparently “scrapes” or copies content from all over the web, from RSS feeds to even sets of search results, to automatically generate pages that probably make little sense to the human visitor but which may pick up some traffic from Google and, in turn, generate clicks on Google AdSense or other ads. Let’s talk about the software first, then I’ll get back to the Shapps connection. Scraping & Auto-Generating Content I’ve qualified my second paragraph above with “apparently” and … [Read more...] about New UK Conservative Party Co-Chair Grant Shapps Founded Google Spamming Business

Pushing Deck Chairs Around Isn’t A Good Plan
I swear, it’s like watching the Titanic having run into that iceberg, as Bing and Yahoo try to figure out what to do with their sinking ships of search. Except that the Titanic was big, and Bing and Yahoo are like small — and they haven’t run into an iceberg. They’re being run over by the search supercarrier SS Google. “Did we just bump something,” yells Capt. Larry Page to his Googler crew. “No, full steam ahead!” yells back first mate Eric Schmidt. “There were some senators in the water, but I think I’ve handled them.” As for the wreckage of the SS Bing and SS Yahoo that Google also plowed through , that’s hardly troubling him. Google’s watertight. The Depressing World Of DC OK, enough with the ship metaphors. Later, fairly soon, I’ll do my own recap of how Google’s big day in Washington DC went, in terms of anti-trust challenges. Google does face some challenges there, primarily because the … [Read more...] about Pushing Deck Chairs Around Isn’t A Good Plan
Yahoo Morale OK, Musical Chairs At Google, Microsoft, Marc Andreessen Joins Facebook Board, & Tech Giants Fight “Patent Trolls”
Lots of action for SearchBiz today; let’s start with Yahoo. Fortune reprints a purported Yahoo employee email that is very upbeat and flies in the face of the gloom and doom analysis going on in the blogs. Meanwhile, TechCrunch reports on another executive loss at the company, while Carl “proxy fight” Icahn uses his blog to officially say nothing about Yahoo and the upcoming fight for control of the Yahoo board. Yahoo for its part is lobbying shareholders to retain its current slate of directors, who Icahn wants to replace. Yahoo says that Icahn has no plan to run the company. Indeed, his plan is to try and coax Microsoft back to the bargaining table to acquire some or all of Yahoo. Microsoft appears to be coaxing some employees from Google or back from Google in an emerging game of developer musical chairs. Carnage4Life offers a kind of roundup of blog comments and posts from some who’ve left Google for Redmond. And developer Sergey Solyanik blogs about his … [Read more...] about Yahoo Morale OK, Musical Chairs At Google, Microsoft, Marc Andreessen Joins Facebook Board, & Tech Giants Fight “Patent Trolls”
Google Director Chairs

I suspect they aren't too comfortable but I've seen them in many photos. Here is a photo on Instagram of just the chairs. This post is part of our daily Search Photo of the Day column, where we find fun and interesting photos related to the search industry and share them with our readers. … [Read more...] about Google Director Chairs
Big Wooden Chair At GooglePlex
We have covered Google's obsession over really big and oversized chairs at their various offices, we probably have several photos of different types of chairs. This photo from Instagram makes the big chair we captured a while back look even bigger. I am not sure if they painted the chair or if this is a new one that is even larger, but it looks even bigger! This post is part of our daily Search Photo of the Day column, where we find fun and interesting photos related to the search industry and share them with our readers. … [Read more...] about Big Wooden Chair At GooglePlex
