Search Engine Roundtable Stories: Google Algorithm Update On September 11th I was offline the past two days but when I came back, I saw a nice amount of chatter of a possible Google update starting around September 11th. Most, not all, of the tools are showing significant volatility and there is some chatter. The chatter is not too extreme but some of the tracking tools are off the charts. Google: Try For A Few 100MS For Time Spent Downloading A Page Metric Google's John Mueller hinted that you should aim for your "Time spent downloading a page" metric in Google Search Console to be less than a few 100 milliseconds. Search Engine Roundtable Stories: Google's John Mueller: "Why Not Put A Date On It" As you all know, I am a huge fan of dates on articles and blog content. I even suggested Google should penalize pages that do not put dates on articles. Google has not gone that far, yet - but John Mueller seems to be a fan of dates on articles as well. Google: If You Want Your Images To Rank Then Use Alt Text Google's John Mueller said this morning on Twitter that if you want your images to rank in Google Image search, it is extremely helpful to Google if you add alt text to your images. Many are not just looking at the quality raters guidelines but also looking back at the advice former head of search Amit Singhal gave around the Google Panda update from May 2011. Google: Taking Old Content & Relabeling It As New Is A Bad SEO Hack Google's John Mueller said on Twitter, with the disclaimer of him putting his user hat on (not Google hat), that relabeling old content as new, without any additional changes is a bad SEO hack. Even the Magic 8-Ball won’t sidestep the question by answering “Maybe.” © Jeff Seeger via Flickr Google first broached the subject in 2010 by announcing site speed would be included in rankings, though the search giant seemed to downplay the change. Fewer than 1 percent of queries would be affected, Google said. Google’s John Mueller said last year: “I don’t know how much of that [PageSpeed ranking factor] is still used at the moment. So we do say we have a small factor in there for pages that are really slow to load where we take that into account.
