There is some chatter starting around Friday, June 8th, in the ongoing WebmasterWorld thread about a possible Google algorithm update or shift starting Thursday night into Friday and throughout the weekend. The chatter is not as high as a normal Google algorithm update, so either this is a limited update, some sort of penalty or filter impacting a niche set of sites or some weird bug. It seems that Google is constantly making changes to their algorithm. Whether it is a little change that only a few sites get affected by or one large update that hits us all – it can happen when we least expect it. When I notice a consistent drop in rankings and impressions for multiple clients, that’s when I think Google possibly had an algorithm change. Reading SEO blogs are a good way to keep track of recent updates such as Search Engine Journal. There are also many tools that you can use to track Algorithm updates such as MozCast or Panguin Tool that are pretty good at monitoring changes. However, the best thing to do when you think your site has been hit by an algorithm update is to stay calm and don’t start making changes without doing research. On Wednesday, some webmasters and SEOs began noticing the automated tracking tools from places like Mozcast, SER Metrics, Algoroo, Advanced Web Rankings, Accuranker, Rank Ranger and SEM Rush mostly begin to show significant signs of a large Google algorithm update. First, this update does seem to be link quality related and not content quality related - but it is still very early to make such a judgement call. Second, Google has still not confirmed or denied the update.
