In the past few days there has been an uptick in complaints from Google News publishers around Google not indexing their new news content. Gary Illyes from Google did a rare appearance on Twitter to say he passed along the feedback to the Google News team to investigate.You can scan through the Google News Help forums and see a nice number of complaints. Also David Esteve, the SEO at the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, posted his concerns on Twitter.This site seems to be indexed fine. In 2009, Google News began reindexing and refreshing stories after they were initially indexed, to make sure to pick up on story corrections. This was a good thing.But recently, there has been an uptick of abuse around this. One disgruntled Google News subscriber posted in the Google News Help forums that one site is refreshing their article titles several times a day in order to keep their stories up at the top of the Google News landing pages.He wrote:I am concerned about a recent development in Google News. As a long time reader of the science page, I have noticed that the Register is changing the titles of different articles in order to regain a front page placement.He then documented five different title changes to a single story in a single day. Last night, Google announced that in response to the new Spanish law, Google will have to shut down Google News within Spain.Spain's new law forces Google to pay a fee for showing snippets of news results in Google News. Google says, the Google News engine actually drives tons of free traffic and thus revenue to these publishers. And since Google News has no ads on it, Google News cannot afford to operate in Spain.So they are delisting all Google News publishers from Google News and turning off Google News from operating in Spain on December 16th.It is only a company like Google who can do that and stick it to the man.Meanwhile, the big losers are the people and publishers within Spain. The ones imposing this new law are government officials. The news publishers need the traffic and revenue. Searchers are reporting in the Google News Help forum that the RSS feed located at the bottom of the Google News page no longer shows your custom news personalizations you made to your Google News feed.Now that RSS feed only shows the top news but non of the customizations you made to your Google News consumption.This has been going on for at least a month now but Stacie Chan from the Google News team said last night that she would bump up the bug to the team.
