Antony Jackson posted a screen shot on Google+ of a new user interface where the search ads and organic search listings kind of blend together. There is this little "Ads X" at the top right of the search results, that looks faded. It is almost impossible to tell the difference between where the ads end and the first organic listing. The only reason one can tell is that the ads look completely irrelevant. Which makes me wonder if the browser has some malware on it and that this is really not an official Google test? However, I am told when you click on the "Ads X" at the top right, the ads collapse and go away. Which is an interesting thing to do.Here is the screen shot, which is not as high resolution as I like:Google has not confirmed this as a test, I do not know if there are some sorts of browser injections happening here or if this is a true Google test. Nothing surprises me with Google these days around these tests but the ads are so weird that it makes me wonder if this is … [Read more...] about Google Tests Search Ads That Blend into Organic & Can Be Closed Out
Honestly, I am not sure if this is new, it might be how image search works in this specific country but in short, a user posted on Twitter a screen shot of viewing the Google image search results that is different than how I see it. In short, this new version shows the image hovering over the other images when you click on it. Here is a screen shot from him on Twitter:This is how I see the same search result, with no hover:We covered Google testing a similar interface about a year ago but this might be related to the outside US image search change from over a year ago. Or maybe not?I think the way Google shows images in the US is different from many other countries?Forum discussion at Twitter. … [Read more...] about Google Tests Image Search Interface With Image Hover Over?
Google is testing a new look for the AMP label in the search results. Instead of the typical gray AMP logo with AMP written next to it, Google is testing a blue AMP logo with "Instant" written in blue next to the AMP logo. Here is a screen shot of the new look provided by Jonathan Jones on Twitter:Here is what I see, the normal gray icon:We also caught Google testing the AMP logo without the "AMP" text next to it. Sergey Alakov who must be included in every single Google tests bucket found another Google test where they are showing a floating button in the local listings that let you toggle between a map view or list view. Here is a GIF where you can see the blue circle button at the bottom right switched the interface from map view to list view:This allows searchers to find local results by proximity to a point on the map visually or by data.I believe this map toggle button is something used in Google Maps as well.Forum discussion at Twitter. … [Read more...] about Google Tests Map View & List View Button In Local Search
Last November, Google tested a new “Sources” section in its search results, in the third column where ads normally appear. It seems the testing is underway again, showing extended information about actors, films, musicians, people and more. It also seems likely everyone may see this extended information soon, and that it’s the “search refresh” the Wall Street Journal wrote about in March finally arriving. Experiment Confirmed I noticed these appearing yesterday in my own search results, and Google has confirmed that there’s an experiment happening: We’re always experimenting with ways to improve search, but we have nothing to announce at this time. Google does indeed often experiment with new formats, randomly tagging some visitors to see the formats being tested. I apparently was one of those tagged. Most people, however, won’t see some of the examples I’ll share below, as they’re not tagged into the experiment. I think that … [Read more...] about Google Testing “Sources” Area With Info About Movies, Books, People, Music & More
