Vlog #11: Greg Sterling

In episode #11 of the vlog series at the Search Engine Roundtable I interviewed Greg Sterling (@gsterling). Some of you might not know this, but I've worked closely with Greg for over 13 years. First while at Search Engine Watch and now at Search Engine Land - we both worked under Danny Sullivan at both publications writing about what we love, search. In fact, we both were awarded, together, Search Engine Land's Outstanding Community Service. In any event - I am a huge fan of Greg Sterling. He is incredibly smart, patient, and has a really nice sense of humor. You might pick up on it during our interview, if not - then some things that he and I say in the interview might sound weird - it is humor, not weird. I talked to Greg about his work history, how he started as a litigation lawyer and after about 9 years of doing that, he decided he had enough. He then kind of stumbled into writing about search engines and then local search. In fact, he wrote a white paper in the super early … [Read more...] about Vlog #11: Greg Sterling

But did you know he first got into SEO doing black-hat techniques to get Flash web sites indexed and ranked in Google search. Greg specifically does a lot of local SEO in the automotive space. Beyond local SEO: Greg Gifford on how to win the visibility race

Last Friday at a packed-out Brighton SEO conference, expert local search consultant Greg Gifford delivered a fast and furious presentation on the secrets of local marketing visibility: it’s not just about local SEO. In a slide-show brimming with references to classic car movies, Greg Gifford raced through a host of tips and tricks that can massively improve your business’s local visibility and let you storm ahead of the competition. The days of “just having a website” and trying to make it rank near the top are over; it takes more than just SEO to market to local customers. That’s not to say that local SEO isn’t important, of course, but it shouldn’t be your only consideration. By thinking about local SEO as just one part of a wider visibility strategy, you can ensure that your business has a presence across multiple channels, not just in search. That’s better for your customers as well as for you. In his talk, Gifford gave a run-down of … [Read more...] about Beyond local SEO: Greg Gifford on how to win the visibility race

An Insider’s Look At SMX Advanced: Greg Sterling

SMX Advanced kicks off tomorrow (well, tonight, really with our SMX Meet & Greet bash), and it’s the third time in a row that the show has sold out. If you still want to attend, don’t completely despair—we’ve established a waitlist in case we have last minute cancellations. Below, Search Engine Land contributing editor Greg Sterling offers his perspective on the show. You’ve been involved with local and mobile search for quite some time. How did you get started in this space? Greg Sterling: I got into local and mobile by accident in 2000. I kind of backed into being an analyst after the first dot-com bust. The firm I was with at the time was focused on the yellow pages industry (The Kelsey Group). Yellow pages data was a central focus of early local search development. After I left Kelsey at the beginning of 2006 I became more broadly involved in exploring how consumers interact with the Internet across sites before buying offline and the implications … [Read more...] about An Insider’s Look At SMX Advanced: Greg Sterling
