Last week’s appearance of Google’s Home Service Ads sent a bit of a shockwave across the Local Search industry. My TL;DR take: This may really screw with organic local pack displays in the SERPs. (Time to rebrand as “Local Lead-Gen Guide”?) This kind of pay-per-lead ad unit requires a significantly high-touch backend process — not one of Google’s traditional strengths. How does this affect local lead-gen players like HomeAdvisor and Angie’s List? I am betting once Google gets the system down, they will want to partner with more experienced players in the space to drive liquidity — similar to the way the big yellow pages (YP) players resell AdWords. Of course, most YP companies are not crazy about that arrangement. This, combined with Facebook’s recent chess moves into Local, is increasingly reducing the amount of organic inventory for local service customers. Local marketers are going to have to continue to get creative in working … [Read more...] about The Locals Take On Google’s Home Service Ads

17 SEO Best Practices That Could Double Your E-Commerce Sales
When I first tell clients that SEO can double online sales for consumer e-commerce retailers, they are skeptical. But not after I demonstrate how I’ve done it for Norwegian e-shops using 8 effective SEO tips. It sounds unrealistic — but isn’t. E-commerce SEO and conversion rate optimization can double your traffic and sales. When I show them proof, my prospective clients have many questions about generating more traffic, boosting conversions, increasing sales, engaging buyers and turning them into fans. Here are the most popular questions — and my answers. It depends on several factors, but here’s what I recommend. Leave the pages up. If the items will be in stock later, leave pages up just the way they are. Don’t delete, hide or replace them. Don’t add another product to them or redirect visitors to other pages. Offer alternative items. If specific products are sold out, offer highly relevant alternatives through widgets on the site. Search Engine Marketing and Garage Sales
I just survived another garage sale that my wife, Irma, has put on. That's three in the last six years. While I absolutely hate them, I do enjoy the end result which is some cash in her pocket (or purse) and a house that is less cluttered. During this one (which I hope is out last), I started to think how a successful garage sale is a lot like a successful search marketing effort. Likewise a garage sale that performs poorly can be compared to a search marketing effort that delivers a poor ROI. My wife has always had very successful sales which has been the result of a lot of hard work. This includes thorough preparation, setting up the environment up so it is comfortable for customers, advertising the sale to draw people in and then properly running it. I compared my wife's sale to our neighbor's, who by complete coincidence during this last one, was having hers at the same time. It was apparent that her preparation, set up and actual running of the sale could not even compete … [Read more...] about Search Engine Marketing and Garage Sales
How Dwyer Group connects the dots between its 13 different home-service franchise brands
Few people may know the Dwyer Group - but, there's a good chance you've heard of Molly Maid, The Glass Doctor or Mr. Appliance, all brands that belong to the company's family of home-service franchise businesses. Up until this year, the 13 different franchises had been managed separately on a brand level. "Dwyer Group is not a consumer-facing brand," says Lisa Zoellner, CMO for the company. "There's never been any sort of link between these brands, no communication effort to help folks understand that all of these brands are from the same family of brands." Since joining Dwyer Group in January of last year, the CMO says she has been focused on building an "overarching" growth strategy that connects the company's collection of well-known home-service businesses. Recently, her team took a major step toward bringing together the company's 13 franchise brands under one umbrella when it launched Neighborly, an online resource that houses all of the Dwyer Group's home-service franchises, … [Read more...] about How Dwyer Group connects the dots between its 13 different home-service franchise brands
11 Best Examples of Ecommerce Navigation To Explode Your Sales
E-commerce companies are spending huge sums of money to bring visitors to their site. As per a study conducted by Frac.tl, it was revealed that Amazon spent around $1.35 billion in search advertising in the year 2015, which was a whopping 97% of its marketing budget. When companies are spending such vast sums of money on advertising, it becomes crucial to have a site navigation that guides the user to easily complete a sale. It can be safely said that navigation is one of the most critical parts of your store’s design. Good navigation provides an improved user experience leading to more sales and revenue. On the other hand, a poor navigation frustrates the users leading to a higher bounce rate. Baymard carried out a study on mobile e-commerce usability on 50 benchmarked e-commerce sites and found that the users were unable to find the items they are looking for due to poor interface. Users misunderstood that the items were not present on the site and this directly … [Read more...] about 11 Best Examples of Ecommerce Navigation To Explode Your Sales
