“I love Jaguars!” When I ask you to understand that sentence, I’m requiring you to take on a pretty significant undertaking, although you do it hundreds of times each day without really thinking about it. The problem comes with the ambiguity of words. “I” is pretty straightforward. I’m referring to me. Not much ambiguity there. “Love” is a little more difficult, but not much. Given the grammatical structure and syntax, we can easily reduce the possible meanings of “love” (of which there are 28, according to Dictionary.com) down to a subset that have slightly different meanings, but all basically translate as, “have a strong liking for.” While there is a margin of error here, it’s minimal. The word “Jaguars” is a different story. To parse my intended meaning, you have to do some substantial guesswork. According to Wikipedia, there are over 30 potential meanings for the word Jaguar. For other words, … [Read more...] about Jaguars & The Turing Test

How Search Works On Google Glass
There are seven voice commands built into this first “Explorers” edition of Google Glass. Two of those six are search-related: “google…” and “get directions to….” The others are “take a photo,” “record a video,” “send a message to,” “make a call to” and “start a Hangout with.” There’s also the predictive search aspect of Google Now, where the device automatically shows me the kind of information Google thinks I’m looking for. So, the chances are pretty strong that a good amount of Google Glass activity is going to involve searching. Or “googling” as Glass suggests. Yep. Even though Google continues to protect its trademark by opposing the use of “google” as a substitute for “search,” the first command available in Glass isn’t “search,” it’s “google.” And in lowercase, even, like the rest of … [Read more...] about How Search Works On Google Glass

How to achieve face-melting content marketing ROI
Jason Miller knows a thing or two about content. He’s the Senior Content Marketing Manager at Linkedin, who presented a session titled “How to Achieve Face-Melting Content Marketing ROI” at ClickZ Live NY last week. With that title, the session immediately piqued my interest and Jason did not disappoint. In case you were wondering, face melting is: “The condition in which, due to an extreme exposure to an event of epic awesomeness, horror or any other emotion on the more extreme end of the spectrum of emotions, one loses all perception of space and time including (but not limited to) a brief lapse in physical awareness. Such an emotional rush can even override pain, which in some cases may be the cause of the rush.” Source: The Urban Dictionary To put this in context, you don’t need more content; you need more EPIC and AWESOME content – aka more relevant content. According to Jason, in a recent survey, 44% of overall respondents say they would … [Read more...] about How to achieve face-melting content marketing ROI
Google’s 10 Oddest Patents – SEO by the Sea
Google has a number of patents listed at the USPTO that have little to do with search. I thought it might make a fun post to make a list of some of the ones that made me scratch my head a little, and wonder why Google might be interested in things like a waterproof cellular telephone case, or a medical instrument that can be “introduced into an animal or human body.” A number of them appear to describe aspects of the way Google sets up their computer systems, which I also thought people might be interested in. Some others involve wireless communications networks. Here’s my list of the Oddest Patents from Google: 1. Instrument for medical purposes This medical instrument uses ultrasonic sound to investigate the structural makeup of biological tissue in organs and vessels. An image from the patent: Its focus is upon solving some of the engineering problems that copper presents during the semiconductor fabrication process. I don’t know if Google is in the … [Read more...] about Google’s 10 Oddest Patents – SEO by the Sea
