#AskAnSEO: On Indexing, Canonicals, and H Tag Use

Want to ask Jenny an SEO question for her bi-weekly column? Fill out our form or use #AskAnSEO on social media. We have another round of great questions this month, so let’s get to them! One question I can’t seem to find substantial answers to is: Are there any implications to SEO for web pages that skip H2s and go directly from an H1 to an H3? Thank you for any insights and advice. –Michelle K. via Facebook Probably not. The H1 is generally known as the item on the page that has the most weight, but this is based on old school rules of HTML. The H1, or Heading 1, was technically used as the heading or “title” of the document. Typically, that “Heading” would also be the “Title” of the page (as in the HTML title), which is why that staid “advice” about not making them the same is so asinine (but I digress)… So in the old rules of HTML, before the advent of CSS, the H1 would be the largest text on the page, the H2 … [Read more...] about #AskAnSEO: On Indexing, Canonicals, and H Tag Use

Schmidt’s “Just Move” Joke About Google Street View & How It Went Missing

Don’t like Google Street View taking pictures of your house? “Just move,” joked Google CEO Eric Schmidt, in a CNN interview on Friday. A controversial joke, no doubt — one made even more controversial for later seeming to disappear from the interview. Don’t blame Google, the company says. It didn’t ask for the quote to be pulled. And by the way, anyone can remove pictures of their home from Google, no need to move required. More below. The Full Interview Versus What Aired Last Friday afternoon, Schmidt did a taped interview with Kathleen Parker and Eliot Spitzer, co-hosts of the new Parker Spitzer show. The interview lasted about 20-25 minutes, a Google representative told me. It involved an extended back-and-forth on privacy issues, I was also told. Friday evening, Eastern time, an edited version of the interview aired. I’ve never watched the show, but I gather this is common. Guests tape a longer interview that gets cut down to a shorter … [Read more...] about Schmidt’s “Just Move” Joke About Google Street View & How It Went Missing

Google doubles down on Product Listings Ads with expandable mega layout

Our eagle-eyed friends over at ChannelAdviser spotted a test that Google is conducting, which allows the user to expand the PLAs shown for any given search query. The new interface includes an arrow icon in the bottom right corner of the product display panel. Click on it and the amount of listings shown will at least double. Here’s what it looks like: If this test is rolled out as a new feature, then it will result in a lot of organic and paid text ads being edged out of the picture, with PLAs almost completely taking over the top of the page. At any rate, it is clear that this should increase search marketers’ focus on optimising PLAs, as the other listing types will have been usurped. As one of up to 16 ads being shown, this is potentially great news for brands that aren’t chasing – or able to attain – the very top listings. Ads beyond ninth place, that would otherwise not be shown, will now feature prominently at the top of the search results. Win. … [Read more...] about Google doubles down on Product Listings Ads with expandable mega layout

The six key components of mobile SEO in 2016

I recently read a droll quote in The Wall Street Journal from the always-entertaining aimClear CEO Marty Weintraub, who said, “The best mobile SEO these days is writing a check to Google.” Weintraub was, of course, referring to shrinking real estate on smartphone search results in Google due to paid listings like product results, and maybe even to the disappearance of search results in mobile search altogether, as Google strives to get mobile searchers answers quickly, without forcing them to click through to a web page. The absurdity of it is that giving Google money for search visibility is not SEO, but paid search, and the quote implies that mobile SEO might not be worth doing if you have a budget for paid search. Look, it’s funny, and the last thing I want to do is ruin the joke. But as Shakespeare once said, “In jest, there is truth.” Weintraub’s definitely onto something with his take on the greatest woes of today’s mobile SEOs: lack … [Read more...] about The six key components of mobile SEO in 2016

The Narcissist’s Guide to Blogging

I'm convinced that all bloggers are narcissists. Not in the when-I'm-president-I-will-fix-the-world kind of way. Much more subtle than that. But nonetheless, bloggers write expecting people to care about what they write. Remember when we used to keep our diaries under lock and key? Now they are published on the WWW for the world to see and share. If you're not yet a blogger but are thinking of blogging, you're probably even more of a narcissist. Why? Because the only reason you haven't started blogging yet is because you haven't figure out what's in it for you. If you already knew that you could get a thousands of fans tomorrow if you started blogging today, wouldn't you start today? Heck, I know I would. But that's because I'm a narcissist, just like you.  Of course, I jest about the narcissism thing, but it does make a valid point. We generally don't start doing anything until we have figured out the WIIFM principle. WIIFM, for those that don't already know (every … [Read more...] about The Narcissist’s Guide to Blogging
