It’s as you would have expected — searches for Steve Jobs skyrocketed at Google, after news of his death spread. Oddly, Google Trends — which shows spiking search queries — failed to show this activity until hours later. Google, Yahoo Didn’t Show Spike Yesterday, I had some people ask me why Steve Jobs wasn’t showing on Google Trends. This is how things looked at 7:15pm PT yesterday, about 2 1/2 hours after the news that Steve Jobs had died broke: As you can see, “steve jobs” wasn’t in the top trending searches. There was nothing related at all. Going to the full list: You can see that some terms related to his death were trending, such as “pancreatic cancer” and “steve wozniak.” The oddity of Steve Jobs not showing in trending terms was also the case at Yahoo. You can see the Yahoo home page below, as of around 8pm PT last night. None of the top ten “Trending Now” terms shown in the top right … [Read more...] about Steve Jobs Searches Spiked At Google

Apple’s Steve Jobs Has Died
Apple cofounder, chairman and former CEO Steve Jobs has died today at age 56. Apple’s board issued the following statement about his death: We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts. The Apple site has the image above of Jobs on its home page, along with this page and statement: Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. If you would like to share your … [Read more...] about Apple’s Steve Jobs Has Died
Steve Jobs At D8: The Search Engine Edition
Steve Jobs’ interview at the D8 conference last night was widely covered and live-blogged. He covered lots of ground, from competing with Android, to rejecting Flash, Apple TV and AT&T’s network. Below I discuss selected (mostly search-related) parts of the lengthy interview. Putting to rest a very persistent rumor, Jobs said that notwithstanding Android and competition with Google on several fronts, the company wouldn’t be banned or removed from any of Apple’s iDevices. He also repeated a previous remark that Google decided to compete with Apple and not the other way around. Jobs affirmed, however, that Cupertino won’t be going into the search business or building its own search engine, despite its recent acquisition of the search-like, “personal assistant” Siri. Here’s the relevant exchange from Engadget’s live blog coverage: Kara [Swisher]: Are you going to remove [Google] from the iPhone? Steve [Jobs]: No . . . We want … [Read more...] about Steve Jobs At D8: The Search Engine Edition
3 Powerful Ways to Expand Your Keyword List
It only makes sense to start an SEO project by finding the exact keywords related to the products or services you offer. After all, unless you discover what phrases your specific audience uses in search, you might end up optimizing the site for the wrong keywords. But here's the catch: most of those phrases are already highly competitive, with thousands of domains trying to rank for them in the search results. If you run a small or newer website, breaking through the competition might prove too challenging. In this post, I'll show you three lesser-used ways to reach beyond your top industry's keywords to expand your organic reach and increase the search traffic. #1. Identify Semantically Related Keywords Although the idea of semantic search has been around for quite a while, not many businesses focus on finding semantically related keywords. And yet, semantic keywords offer a compelling opportunity for reaching a wider audience and expanding the search visibility. To fully understand … [Read more...] about 3 Powerful Ways to Expand Your Keyword List
Critics Rave About iPhone 5 But Many Roast Apple’s Maps
While the iPhone 5 itself is getting very positive reviews — essentially raves — Apple Maps have received a mixed response. It has emerged as the potential Achilles Heel of the new handset (other than the generally reviled “lightening” dock connector). Waze CEO Noam Bardin was quoted last night by Business Insider saying that the local data were weak and the navigation might get people lost. Most of the formal reviewers didn’t test Apple’s new maps very thoroughly, however. David Pogue’s New York Times article is representative of many critics who only gave Maps cursory attention. (Update: Pogue has a separate article on iOS 6 today, I excerpt the relevant discussion below in the postscript.) In general the level of attention paid to Apple Maps and the corresponding critics’ responses are “all over the map,” so to speak. Some have praised the operation and appearance of the new mapping app, but there appears to be a consensus … [Read more...] about Critics Rave About iPhone 5 But Many Roast Apple’s Maps
