SEMPO LA Event Highlights Rapidly Emerging Opportunities In Mobile

At the recent SEMPO LA Mobile Event (sponsored by AT&T interactive) moderator Danny Sullivan told a story about the early days at Google. As early as 2000, Sergey Brin was telling everyone who would listen about the incredible applications of his search engine on cell phones. Even for a forward thinker like Danny, this seemed a little bit farfetched and ahead of its time. Fast forward to 2011, and Google still has quite a bit to say about mobile. Mobile Commerce Is Maturing Bon Mercado, a mobile product specialist at Google, said that the wide adoption of smart phones in the US (up to 50% have them in 2011) is paving the way for increased search queries, commercial transactions, and unique ad formats. Aol’s Tim Armstrong & Arianna Huffington At Signal LA

FM’s Signal LA event kicks off today with a dynamic duo: Aol CEO Tim Armstrong, who is joined by Arianna Huffington, who’s Huffington Post site Aol bought this week and becomes the new president & editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group within Aol. Tim and Arianna were at the Super Bowl together, it turns out, when the deal was finalized — so there was lots of hugging, with everyone trying to figure out what’s going on, Tim tells with laughs. John says to Tim, “this is a very big bet.” Aol spent 40% of its cash — why? Tim, three things: price, strategy & execution needed for context. Price, it’s a very reasonable deal on an earnings multiple, Mark Mahaney from Citi says so as well, Tim cites. Strategy, people saying “another strategy” but Tim says from Day 1 he’s been saying “content, content, content.” There were 2700 articles about the deal yesterday, more than the Super Bowl, and that … [Read more...] about Aol’s Tim Armstrong & Arianna Huffington At Signal LA

Newspapers Amok! New York Times Spamming Google? LA Times Hijacking Cars.com?

Back in March, Google warned that allowing your internal search results to be listed in Google might be considered spamming. Today, there’s somebuzz that one of the top listings for a search for sex on Google turns out to be an internal search results page from the New York Times. In looking at that, I also came across an example of the LA Times "hijacking" the listing of Cars.com for a search on cars, thought the fault for that lies with Google. Let’s start with the New York Times: John Andrews wroteyesterdaythat internal search pages from the query.nytimes.com domain were ranking well for variousterms. Threadwatch started checking around and came up with the money shot today, that the New York Timesgrabbed a top spot for "sex" withthis page.Threadwatch headlined it "the web’s freshest spam." Search Engine Journalpicked up on the spamming charge, which gotexposed to those over at Digg. So is it spamming? Yep. As my earlier article,Google Warning AgainstLetting Your … [Read more...] about Newspapers Amok! New York Times Spamming Google? LA Times Hijacking Cars.com?
