You never get a second chance to make a first impression. In competitive paid search, the wrong landing page will cost you money. While choosing the right pages has always struck us as fairly intuitive, we think that’s not the case for most other paid search marketers, given the widespread phenomena of poor landing page choices that we’ve seen. It isn’t that paid search managers have lost their intuition, its that they’ve turned landing page choices over to the same machines that pick their keywords. Because agreement between the keyword and the landing pages is so crucial, we have always put tremendous time and thought into their development. Ours is a human-centric process that involves sharp people working from the landing pages backwards to pick keywords. We built proprietary tools to speed the process and build out comprehensive lists, but it all starts with our analysts using good judgment, knowledge of language and leveraging years of experience with what … [Read more...] about Choose Your Paid Search Landing Pages Wisely

Over the past few months, I’ve been testing various Android phones. Overall, the platform has continued to improve, to the degree that I can easily swap an Android phone for my iPhone 4 and not feel a loss. But unlike the one-size-fits-all iPhone, each Android phone has its own individual characteristics. Below, a look at how three different Android cousins performed for me and measured up against the iPhone. From Windows Mobile To Apple’s iPhone… First, some background. I’m a long-time smartphone user. My first was back in 2004, a Windows Mobile flip phone. I went through various Windows Mobile phones over the years, such as the Verizon XV6700 pictured below. I turned my nose up at the original iPhone, as it lacked a physical keyboard and 3G. But when the iPhone 3G came out, the 3G issue was solved — and I discovered that the on-screen keyboard really was so good that I didn’t need a physical one. I jumped mobile platforms. Android, The Early … [Read more...] about Droid 2, Samsung Fascinate & Google Nexus S
Search Engine Land has a new look and features! For our regular readers, as well as new visitors, here’s a guide to what you’ll find on the redesigned site and how everything works. New “Flip Box” For Featured Stories One of our biggest challenges is that we publish so much content that it can be hard to feature everything. On a busy news day, some great news stories and feature articles could get “pushed down” or “pushed off” our home page. Plus, some fantastic columns might be missed, given they come “below the fold” on the home page. This is where our new “flip box” comes in. You’ll find it on the home page of the site, just above our news stories: The box allows you to easily scan through a variety of stories, such as news items that are still important, even if they’re no longer breaking, recent features and analysis pieces, along with recent columns. By default, the flip box will automatically … [Read more...] about Welcome To The New Search Engine Land!
Search Engine Land’s SMX East search engine marketing conference is headed back to New York City from Sept. 13-15. We’ve got a great agenda. This is my semi-traditional preview for our readers of what we’ve got planned. You should go! Here’s why. Why Everyone Should Come! SMX East is one of the two large Search Marketing Expo events that Search Engine Land’s publisher Third Door Media runs each year in the United States. SMX West, held in San Jose Feb 28-March 1, is the other. The event is entirely focused on search marketing. Search remains the biggest of the online marketing channels, and it deserves the focused deep dive that only we provide over three days. At SMX East, search isn’t shoved in among other marketing topics. It’s proudly performing center stage, all the time. The conference isn’t just for search marketers. SEOs, SEMs and those doing both will find a welcome home at the show, but anyone even remotely involved with … [Read more...] about Search Engine Land’s SMX East 2011 Comes To NYC & Why You Should Go
Our next Search Engine Land conference, SMX West 2012, comes to San Jose from February 28-March 1. This is my preview of what we’ve got on the agenda, over 50 sessions covering all aspects of search marketing. Consider it a personal invite of why you should come. SMX: All Search, All The Time SMX West is one of the two big Search Marketing Expo shows each year programmed by Search Engine Land. SMX East, held in October 2-4 in New York City will be our other one. I and my co-chair Chris Sherman oversee conference programming. No one’s been organizing search marketing conferences for as long as we have. I’ve been at it for nearly 15 years now; Chris for almost as long. The show has sessions focused around search marketing. It’s not that we don’t love other types of digital marketing. We do! That’s why we started our Marketing Land site. But search marketing is the largest of the digital marketing activities. It deserves the type of deep dive into all … [Read more...] about Search Engine Land’s SMX West 2012 Search Marketing Conference Comes To San Jose
