Infographics (or data visualizations) are all the rage in content marketing today, and Visual.ly is launching with hopes of becoming “the largest community for sharing, creating and promoting data visualizations.” The site currently offers a search functionality and a submission feature to help users find & share infographics from across the web. As expected with a name like Visual.ly, the site is aesthetically appealing with quite a few bells and whistles. A “Twitterize Yourself” section exists allowing users to face-off against other users while cartooning themselves. The ‘labs‘ section of the site is currently in beta and will be a source to help users facilitate the creation of graphics. However, the main resources to Visual.ly are the search and sharing aspects, so let’s take a look at how these work. Searching Properly indexing data rich images is a tough task to undertake. Google URL Shortener Opened To The Public; Comparing To Bit.ly & Twitter
Just what the world needs, another URL shortener, right? Google seems to think so, and it’s now making its own Goo.gl service widely available to anyone — complete with tracking and statistics — for free. Below, more about the new entry, how it compares to the more established Bit.ly plus a look at Twitter’s “wrapping” service. Dashboard To View What You’ve Shortened Google began offering its own shortening service last December, saying it was something they especially thought Google Toolbar users and those using its Feedburner service would want. Now it’s being offered to anyone much more easily through a dedicated web site. How’s it measure up? I’ll compare it to the shortener I’m most familiar with, Bit.ly, one that I also consider the market leader. As with both, you can keep a running record of all URLs you’ve created. Victor Hugo Google doodle marks publication of the French novelist’s classic, ‘Les Misérables’
Today’s Google doodle is a callout to French novelist, poet and human rights activist Victor Hugo. The doodle marks the publication date of what is arguably his most well-known novel, “Les Misérables.” “Before he turned 30, Hugo was already an established poet, dramatist, artist, and novelist,” writes the doodle team on the Google Doodle Blog. “Hugo appeared on a French banknote and is honored with streets, parks, hiking trails, and statues in most large French cities, as well as in Guernsey, where he lived in exile.” Designed by doodler Sophie Diao, the doodle leads to a search for “Victor Hugo” and includes a slide show depicting key scenes from his work. Google notes that Hugo was exiled for nearly 10 years because of his political views, and it was during that time that he wrote numerous poetry collections and books about social injustice. He would go on to start the Association Littéraire et Artistique … [Read more...] about Victor Hugo Google doodle marks publication of the French novelist’s classic, ‘Les Misérables’

Harness The Power Of Twitter For Local Marketing
The Twitter social networking and micro-blogging service was launched only two years ago, but it’s rocketing up in usage numbers quickly, and it seems likely to turn red-hot. Many companies are rapidly cluing into the promotional value, but smaller businesses appear slow to hop on the bandwagon. Here are a few tips on leveraging Twitter to help your locally-oriented business. As oft pointed-out among search marketers, Twitter links do not pass “link juice”—that is, they don’t transfer PageRank value from Twitter to linked-to sites. Even though links in Twitter are nofollowed, there still could be some small value in real ranking terms, according to the theory that “citations” or “references” appear to sometimes help improve rankings in local search.
