“Who Is Osama Bin Laden?”

“Who is Osama Bin Laden?” Does anyone really need to ask? Apparently so, according to Yahoo — teenagers. Two thirds of those searching for an answer to that question were teenagers, the company says, along with some other related search statistics. Teens & Osama Bin Laden’s Death Yahoo’s released a mishmash of stats about Osama bin Laden-related searches, with the suggestion that younger people are more interested in the topic. From Yahoo’s press release: News of Osama bin Laden’s death seemed to have struck a chord with younger folks who grew up during the war on terrorism. I didn’t feel the stats were comprehensive enough to draw hard conclusions, however. Nearly 20% of searches for “osama bin laden” are by teenagers, Yahoo reported. OK, but are 20% of Yahoo’s searchers also teenagers? If so, that stat is in proportion to what you’d expect and not particularly noteworthy. Still, one statistic especially stood … [Read more...] about “Who Is Osama Bin Laden?”

Google & The Death Of Osama Bin Laden

I remember distinctly how Google reacted during the 9/11 attacks. Miserably, having to resort to using its ad space and special links on its home page to keep people informed, because its results were so out of date. How things have changed, in so many ways. Google On 9/11 Recall Google back on September 11. The screenshot below is four hours after the attack: You can see how Google was literally telling people not to try searching, putting links to news sites on its home page (unprecedented, for Google). That’s because the results people got, if they did do a search, were chilling, sad and not reflective of the tragedy that had just unfolded. Here’s how they looked four hours after the attack: “View from WTCA Headquarters” — like I said, sad, chilling and not reflective of what had happened. Eventually, Google had to use its ad space to help inform people. This was six hours after the attack: At the top of the results, you can see the ad unit being … [Read more...] about Google & The Death Of Osama Bin Laden

Twitter Sees Highest “Sustained” Activity Ever In Wake Of Osama Bin Laden News

Twitter has released new numbers showing last night’s announcement that Osama bin Laden was dead generated the most activity on the service that it has ever seen, in terms of “sustained rate of tweets.” From 10:45 PM Eastern time on May 1 through 12:30 AM on May 2, there were on average 3,440 tweets per second (TPS) happening, according to stats that Twitter has released to the press. This was the “highest sustained rate of tweets ever,” the company said. It also released a chart of the activity: By “sustained rate of tweets,” Twitter is talking about a high rate of activity continuously over a stretch of time. For over two hours last night, tweets per second were above the 3,000 mark. In contrast, tweets per second were only above level that during Super Bowl 2011 for 20 minutes, Twitter said. Other Events Still Had Bigger “Peak” Activity In terms of “peak” TPS, for the most tweets per second at a given moment, … [Read more...] about Twitter Sees Highest “Sustained” Activity Ever In Wake Of Osama Bin Laden News

Tebow-Mania Hits Twitter: More Tweets-Per-Second Than Bin Laden, Steve Jobs & Beyoncé’s Pregnancy

It happened yesterday during the NFL playoff game between Tebow’s Denver Broncos and the defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Tebow’s legend has grown this season thanks to his leading the team on several miraculous late-game comebacks, coupled with the quarterback’s penchant to kneel down and openly pray on the sidelines during games. (A practice that’s now called Tebowing, which has also been officially recognized as a word in some quarters.) Anyhoo, when Tebow threw an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime yesterday to beat the Steelers, Twitter erupted at a rate of 9,420 tweets-per-second (TPS), which the company announced today was a new record for sports events: Last night @TimTebow lead the @Denver_Broncos to an overtime playoff win and a new sports Tweets per second record: 9420 — Twitter (@twitter) January 9, 2012   That shattered the previous sports record, which was 7,196 TPS at the end of the FIFA Women’s … [Read more...] about Tebow-Mania Hits Twitter: More Tweets-Per-Second Than Bin Laden, Steve Jobs & Beyoncé’s Pregnancy
