A late 2018 article in Medium magazine claims: “Link building was being declared dead for years. A lot of businesses who could not learn and adapt to the rules and the requirements of the skills and tools had to give up on link building.” Undeniably, link building has become increasingly challenging. Yet with no sign of Google dropping links as a metric from its core ranking algorithm, it is as vital as ever. To be of any value, link building must have a measurable financial impact. For e-commerce brands, rather than building hundreds of links to one big hero piece, this often means earning a handful of links to a whole host of product pages. Effective link building is and always has been challenging – it requires agile strategy, skill, and sustained effort. Most importantly, however, the key to effective link building for e-commerce brands lies in cross-departmental collaboration. From product and brand to PR and SEO, all teams should view effective link … [Read more...] about Why collaboration is king: How to synchronise for strategic link building

I’ve found this to be especially true when it comes to link building. SEO, although technical in nature, can be explained in real-world measures to upper management. There’s data, traffic levels, technical configurations and on-site elements directly in your control to measure and report. With link building, upper management often approaches metrics in a single, dogged mindset: price per link. The easiest way to quantify the value of a link is through cost — particularly to the budgetary gatekeeper. Measuring link-building campaigns by cost is fair, but it creates the wrong mindset. It’s the difference between price and value. Today, I want to explain how SEOs can and should sell the value of link building upstream, instead of the price. Three critical stages to communicate value As an in-house SEO, you’ve reached the point where you need links to achieve your goals. So how do you request additional budget? It starts with communicating value. There are … [Read more...] about Selling the value of link building to management
Here, I will examine some of the most common link building tactics employed by e-commerce sites — including common problems with tactics and creative ideas for making them work to the fullest. 1. Adding A Blog In Hopes Of Attracting Links While it is theoretically possible to garner links by adding a blog to your e-commerce site, there are a number of challenges that come along with this approach. The objection I hear most often is that sites that sell products directly don’t really want to be content publishers, often due to a lack of resources or a lack of interest. Adding a blog is often done reluctantly. I think back to the scuba site I once worked with, where the owner said, “I want to be in the water all day, not typing.” He had no interest in blogging himself, and he had no interest in hiring a writer because that person would not have his diving expertise. There’s also the lesser-discussed issue of blog promotion. Your new blog is invisible unless … [Read more...] about E-Commerce Link Building — The Challenge That Won’t Go Away
We’re edging ever closer to 2016, and already prediction posts are publishing. Recently, hoopla around manual link building arose when a 2016-focused post predicted its demise. My fellow columnist Eric Ward shared his thoughts on why manual link building will never be obsolete. I suggest you read his post — he’s experienced, insightful and basically the godfather of link building. If you’re interested in SEO and links, you should be aware of what Ward has to say on the matter. I agree with Ward that manual link building will continue to play a vital role in SEO — and search as a channel — into 2016 and beyond. Without the intentional, strategic pursuit of links, you’re missing out on search as a channel and leaving marketing opportunities on the table. Today, I’m going to share my perspective on why manual link acquisition will continue to be important. I work for an agency serving nearly a hundred clients of all sizes, and our primary … [Read more...] about Manual Link Building & SEO
In a recent Google+ live hangout, Google’s webmaster trends analyst, John Mueller, answered a common question: “Is link building in any way good?” His answer was somewhat surprising. “In general, I’d try to avoid that,” he said, indicating that link building, long believed to be an essential process in SEO, is no longer advisable. Mueller elaborated on his answer, saying that Google does take links into consideration as part of its ranking algorithm, but that building links directly isn’t the right way to go about it. He stated that your goal should be to make sure your content “stands on its own” and easy for your users to share on their own blogs and websites. He also downplayed the importance of links, insisting that the ranking algorithm takes many factors into consideration, and building links might ultimately do more harm than good for your site. Links Doing More Harm Than Good? The short version of Mueller’s response is … [Read more...] about What’s The State Of Link Building For SEO In 2015 & Beyond?
