Yesterday we reported Google came out with a new link report for the new Google Search Console to replace the old link report in the old. The thing is, the numbers might differ when you look at the old and new report because Google has changed how they calculate and get that data, I think. The new report shows for this site a total of 2,563,119 external links while the old report shows 2,552,763 total external links. That is a 10,356 link difference. Not a significant number when looking at 2.5M links but still, why is it different.Google said in their help document that this is a known issue, saying:Data in this report is more accurate than the old Links to your site report. As a result, the values in the new report may be lower, but this does not indicate a drop in links, but rather a more accurate and secure way of reporting them. But I do not see a drop, I see an increase.I asked Google's John Mueller about this on yesterday's hangout at the 5:27 mark into the video and he said … [Read more...] about Google’s New Link Report May Show Different Data & Numbers

New Google Link Report To Get Download Latest Links Feature
Google launched the new link report in the new beta Google Search Console this week. He said on Twitter "they're coming" referring to the "latest links" download button. Here is what that button looks like on the old report:It is missing from the new report:The old report is still available, and will be for the foreseeable future, so that feature won't go away. Google’s John Mueller Explains Why Expired Product Pages May Become Soft 404s
Google’s John Mueller addressed an issue some site owners might run into where expired product pages are reported as soft 404s.This topic came up during a recent Google Webmaster Central hangout where the following question was asked:“Google is reporting our expired product pages as soft 404. These URLs redirect to a relevant, alternate product with a message saying the product they wanted is unavailable.”When content is no longer available, it’s standard practice to redirect it to an equivalent page. That’s exactly what this site owner is doing, so why is Google reporting the expired pages as soft 404s?Mueller explains that it likely has to do with the messaging on the page that users are redirected to.Googlebot may crawl the page, see a message that says “no longer available,” and assumes that applies to the page itself.Mueller says that’s an issue which is not entirely avoidable. If a new product is replacing the old one, Mueller says … [Read more...] about Google’s John Mueller Explains Why Expired Product Pages May Become Soft 404s

Here’s what you need to know.Google will notify users when a site is moved to the mobile first indexContrary to what has been stated in the past, Google does intend to notify webmasters via Search Console when a site has been moved to the mobile-first index.Google has already started moving sites to the new index, so presumably the messaging is still being worked on because no one has been notified yet. However, you can look for the following signals which may confirm whether your site has been moved:An increase in activity from the mobile version of GooglebotA noticeable drop-off in desktop trafficIt doesn’t sound like the decrease in desktop traffic should be a cause for concern. Mueller says no one has noticed that a significant number of … [Read more...] about Google’s John Mueller Reveals New Details About Mobile-First Index
