Accompanying a delegation led by former New Mexico Gov. and UN Ambassador Bill Richardson, Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt arrived earlier this morning in Pyongyang, North Korea. They were there on what was described by Richardson as “a private humanitarian mission.” Richardson posted the following comment about the trip on his website: Governor Bill Richardson will travel to North Korea next week on a private humanitarian mission. The delegation will consist of former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, Dr. KA Namkung; Jared Cohen, Director of Google Ideas; as well as some staff members. The US State Department expressed disapproval of the trip. The trip was originally scheduled for December and was postponed once in deference to the State Department’s disapproval. Richardson said that the delegation isn’t representing the US government in any capacity but that he’s seeking … [Read more...] about Googles Schmidt Goes To North Korea But Why?

Back from his trip to North Korea, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt has posted a few thoughts on his visit. But far more interesting and revealing was the travelogue from his daughter Sophie, who accompanied him on the trip. Schmidt posted about his visit on his Google+ page, saying North Korean technology is limited, the internet is supervised and that North Korea will find it increasingly difficult to stay isolated, concluding: As the world becomes increasingly connected, the North Korean decision to be virtually isolated is very much going to affect their physical world and their economic growth. It will make it harder for them to catch up economically. We made that alternative very, very clear. Once the internet starts in any country, citizens in that country can certainly build on top of it, but the government has to do one thing: open up the Internet first. They have to make it possible for people to use the Internet, which the government of North Korea … [Read more...] about After North Korea Trip, Eric Schmidts Daughter Outshines Father With Travelogue
Have you heard of Digital Sky Technologies (DST)? Chances are that until the last few weeks, you’d never registered the name but you now know there is some connection with Facebook? In fact, Digital Sky Technologies is a Russian Moscow-based investment firm which already owned some 1.96% of Facebook, which it bought for some $200m in 2009, and with the most recent $125m investment it now has a 10% stake in the social network. But if I told you it owned ICQ (all of it) and has stakes in Groupon and Zynga — you might be starting to think that we should all learn some more about Digital Sky’s portfolio: Mail.ru — DST wholly owns this having acquired it in 2006. It is the largest free e-mail service of the Russian web. A London IPO is planned for some time in the near future. Mail.ru also offers a search facility and was once one of the largest search destinations in Russia — although it provided the search facilities via the largest Russian search engine … [Read more...] about How Russian And Chinese Investors Are Dominating The Web Outside North America
A little more than three years ago, Facebook made waves with their acquisition of Instagram. The 10-digit sale price was criticized by some at the time, however, there are very few folks laughing today. A few major hurdles have been eliminated, making Instagram a major player for traditional media buyers and brand budgets. Today, Instagram ads are available for all advertisers, both small and large, in more than 30 countries. Current countries include Spain, Italy, Mexico, India and South Korea — with more on the way with a target of September 30. This is a huge development in accessibility for marketers, as they can leverage Facebook’s popular ad infrastructure and include Instagram with objective targeting or shopping directly within Instagram. On top of the new availability and global targeting, Instagram has rolled out new ad options for advertisers (making it easier to repurpose existing creative): Landscape Photo & Video Ads. No longer will advertisers be … [Read more...] about Instagram Has Arrived As A Haven For Ad Dollars, Thanks To Global Ad Roll-out & New Ad Options
