So, Google just updated its Page Speed Insights tool – the tool webmasters can use to analyze and grade their websites performance. According to Google, the old tool provided suggestions without context on how the website/pages performed in real world, making it difficult for webmasters to figure out when and what to implement based on the suggestions. This time around, the new PageSpeed Insights tool will use data from the Chrome User Experience Report, which will make sure that the analysis is more in tune with real world data. 10 Best WordPress Plugins to Improve Page Speed
Did you know that Americans spend an estimated 37 billion hours per year waiting in lines, which equates to approximately 118 hours per person? This is what statistics published by Harvard Business School had to say! Having to wait for something, be it for buses, trains or at the airport, waiting in traffic jams, or waiting at the doctor’s office for your turn, the wait itself can be one of the most frustrating experiences for a human being. The reason why waiting is annoying is that you see a lot of your valuable time being wasted, which you could have otherwise used for something productive. And when I think of being frustrated while waiting, the most frustrating experience for me is waiting for a website to loan. And, I find that I am not alone in this. People don’t like to wait for websites to load, making slow loading times a major cause of losing visitors, with Google stating that a website could lose more than half its visitors if its load … [Read more...] about 10 Best WordPress Plugins to Improve Page Speed
Google Page Speed Uses Desktop Or Mobile Based On Searcher
Image credit to ShutterstockThere has been some confusion around page speed recently, espesially around the new Speed Update coming in July. In short, the new one in July, will for the first time, introduce a separate page speed score of some sorts for mobile. Before Google only looked at desktop page speed. Now, Google will look at both desktop and mobile. So people were thinking Google would use the page speed score from mobile only. That is not true. I asked John Mueller of Google and he confirmed with me that those searching Google on desktop, Google will use the desktop page speed score of your site and those searching on mobile, Google will use the mobile page speed score of your site.John said this in a webmaster hangout at the 37:35 mark. I asked "Google is going to use the page speed of which version. Does it depend on if it's being accessed on Google mobile versus Google Desktop?" John responded "Yeah, yeah. It's specific to the mobile search results or the desktop search … [Read more...] about Google Page Speed Uses Desktop Or Mobile Based On Searcher
Upcoming Google Speed Update Will Look More Closely At Page Speed Variations
So John Mueller of Google spoke a bit about page speed in this mornings Google webmaster video hangout at the 1:58 mark. He said the current page speed factor, which is desktop only, only looks to see if a page is super slow and he mentioned minutes or so to load. He said if it would "takes like multiple minutes to actually load a page" that would be considered "really really slow." But then when he mentioned the upcoming Speed Update coming to mobile search in July, he said that will be a "little bit more differentiated." We know it will use real Chrome user data, which the revised page insights tool from Google has told us already. But John, at least how I am hearing it, makes it sound like it is not only going to be about really really slow sites suffering but maybe - just maybe, different levels? The question was more about John explaining that speeding up your pages for just GoogleBot won't work because Google is also going to be using real user data from Chrome. So maybe … [Read more...] about Upcoming Google Speed Update Will Look More Closely At Page Speed Variations
Google Says Pick One Testing Tool For Measuring Page Speed
As you all know very well, the Google Speed Update has begun rolling out and while it is a bit too early to see the impact SEOs and webmasters are super eager to make sure their web pages do not get dinged by this update. Remember, this update only impacts the slowest pages - so I wouldn't get too worked up about the Speed Update. But that doesn't stop SEOs from obsessing about the little details and no one would suggest anyone not to work on making their web pages faster. One of the most common questions I get is how do I know if my pages are fast enough for the Google Speed Update? The answer is, you don't know. Google won't be sending you a notice in Google Search Console and Google won't tell you which specific tool to use to measure your page speed. Google just says you can use new PageInsights report over here, also check the Chrome user experience report and use the Lighthouse tool or other tools. This morning, Gary Illyes from Google told someone to pick one tool they like … [Read more...] about Google Says Pick One Testing Tool For Measuring Page Speed
