Ask Jumps, Google Slips and Yahoo Leads American Customer Satisfaction Index for Search

For the first time, Yahoo has beaten Google in the annual University of Michigan American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). The survey measures U.S. consumer satisfaction across a broad range of business and product categories including “e-business,” which covers search. The survey asks a statistically representative sample of consumers to rate their experiences with portals and search engines according to a number of criteria, which produces an overall satisfaction score on a 100 point scale. The search/portal category has been rated since 2000. Until this year, Google has always lead the ASCI since the first year the index included it, in 2002. Among the top engines, Ask saw the largest gains in satisfaction (5.6%) while Yahoo emerged as the overall winner, beating Google by a single point. But Yahoo and Google were trending in opposite directions, with Yahoo gaining and Google losing a roughly equivalent percentage (see below). AOL saw the biggest decline in … [Read more...] about Ask Jumps, Google Slips and Yahoo Leads American Customer Satisfaction Index for Search

Yahoo Lays Off Flickr Customer Service Team, Reportedly 12% Of Entire Staff

When Flickr Product Chief Markus Spiering wrote a couple weeks ago about things that were being discarded as part of a “New Year’s cleaning,” there was no mention it would include the site’s core customer service team. But at least some, if not all of that team, was given pink slips on Monday — and, according to some tweets, it happened without a word of warning or explanation. A Yahoo spokesperson tonight said “no comment” in response to our requests for information about the Flickr layoffs. It’s not certain exactly who and how many Flickr employees were fired, but there’s plenty of evidence to be pieced together via blog posts and tweets from current and former Flickr employees. For starters, David Fusco — whose LinkedIn profile describes him as a senior program manager at Flickr — tweeted Tuesday morning that “12 percent of Flickr” is gone, and included a photo (see link in his tweet) of what we assume is … [Read more...] about Yahoo Lays Off Flickr Customer Service Team, Reportedly 12% Of Entire Staff

When Social Media Attacks the Wrong Person

It's no secret that the pack mentality that often powers social media success can also turn into an angry mob complete with virtual pitchforks at the drop of a hat. That's great when the mob is helping to bring social injustice to light, but it's a nightmare when the mob attacks the victim. Unfortunately, the murky waters of Internet gossip and the fuzzy ethics that seem to rule online behavior can make it difficult to know who the victim actually is. Enter the A&P grocery chain and The Fresh Beets. The latest viral video to storm YouTube and to garner mainstream news attention is a 4 minute rap video put together by two brothers from New Jersey that calls themselves "The Fresh Beets." The video, called "Produce Paradise" features the two amateur rappers working their way through the produce department of the A&P that employed them, rapping about the fruits and veggies in a less than positive manner. That probably wouldn't have gotten them more than a talking to from a … [Read more...] about When Social Media Attacks the Wrong Person

7 Principles for Changing Behavior from @DanielPink: #SXSWi 2015

As I spoke to a fellow SXSW attendee in the shuttle earlier in the day, I mentioned I was planning to attend behavior expert Daniel Pink’s session about fear, shame, empathy, and more ways to change behavior. The gentleman’s response was, “Is that a presentation, or a therapy session?” Although I didn’t quite know the answer at the time, Pink’s topic ended up being thoroughly enticing and the audience walked away with a number of valuable takeaways applicable to both business and life. I’d heard of Daniel’s books, Drive and To Sell is Human, but didn’t know much about him beyond that. He has a lot of tangible experience “in the field” and was able to provide actual, first-hand examples to all of his assertions. In addition to holding a degree in linguistics, Daniel is the co-producer of NatGeoTV’s show Crowd Control, which is an “undercover science invention show.” In it, Pink and his team strive to … [Read more...] about 7 Principles for Changing Behavior from @DanielPink: #SXSWi 2015
