Google recently released documentation on the new enhanced campaigns. They have also run training events in different cities. I have been able to enhance a few of our client campaigns as well as take part in training. The goal at Google in their own words is to “deliver the most relevant information to the end user”. Their quest to deliver on their promise sometimes complicates the lives of advertisers trying to reach the intended audience. Every advertiser wants to get their message to the right audience, motivate the audience to click, and produce a positive ROI. When Google changes the rules of the game, it is best to know the new rules so we can bend them in our favor. It has long been proven that breaking the rules only ends badly for the advertiser so we have to work within the rules. Let’s look at a few of the new “rules” of the game. For Google’s version of the enhancements, you can see them at … [Read more...] about How to Prepare For the Upcoming Changes of Google Enhanced Campaigns

Google’s Private Index & Screen Crawling
As over-the-air updates for Android 6, also called Android Marshmallow, start slowly rolling out to some Nexus devices, many SEOs are wondering how this well-publicized update will impact mobile user behavior and search. This is especially true because Google’s enhanced predictive search utility, Now on Tap, will be deeply integrated in the browser and OS. Having received the update, I can tell you that so far, it has not lived up to the hype; but that does not mean that it will not have a huge impact on the direction and future of mobile search. To predict the impact of more integrated predictive search, we can start by looking at the mobile Chrome, search and Google Now updates that were made before the soft launch of Android Marshmallow (since they all appeared to be in preparation for the more comprehensive Android Marshmallow launch) and compare them to the post-launch reality. In the past six months, there have been a large number of subtle and not-so-subtle changes, and … [Read more...] about Google’s Private Index & Screen Crawling
The Strange Explanation Of Why Windows Phone Users Lost Access To Google Maps
Windows Phone User? No Google Maps For You! To recap briefly, some Windows Phone users started reporting (as covered by The Verge) that they were unable to reach Google Maps using the Internet Explorer web browser on their phones. They got redirected instead to the Google home page. Google initially suggested (as covered by Gizmodo) that this was because Internet Explorer on Windows Phone wasn’t a WebKit-based browser and so Google Maps wouldn’t work for it. Google later added (as covered by The Next Web) that it was redirecting people on Windows Phone devices because of this incompatibility, but Google said this would soon change, since the latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows Phone was now apparently Google Maps-capable: Google sent us the same statement that The Next Web received, which says: We periodically test Google Maps compatibility with mobile browsers to make sure we deliver the best experience for those users. In our last test, IE mobile still did … [Read more...] about The Strange Explanation Of Why Windows Phone Users Lost Access To Google Maps
Real Life With The Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0 Smartphone
The third generation of Google’s “pure” Nexus-series phone goes on sale tomorrow, the Galaxy Nexus. Sporting the latest version of Android, is this the phone you’ve been waiting for? As always, maybe. There are nice things, there are bad things. Here’s my past month living with the phone. First Impressions I’ve had a Galaxy Nexus review unit since the middle of November, and I covered some initial thoughts about the phone in my earlier review, First Impressions: Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0 Smartphone. In particular: Finally, a “pure” Android phone comes to Verizon’s awesome 4G network It’s big, but it feels good The camera gets better controls Despite having NFC, there’s no Google Wallet support Android 4.0 takes getting used to after Android 2.2 Button confusion! How do I go back? Where’s the search button? I’ll revisit some of these issues, but not all of them. My focus in this review is on how I’ve … [Read more...] about Real Life With The Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0 Smartphone
Google+ Adds Content Recommendations For Mobile Websites
Google just announced the new feature today, which blends both Google+ activity (such as +1s and shares) and search authorship to determine the best related content to show to users as they browse mobile website content. Readers will see recommendations whether they’re signed in to a Google account or not. If they are signed in, though, they’ll see more personalized recommendations that involve content that was +1’s or shared by their people in their Google+ circles. The feature works for iOS and Android, for the Android browser, Chrome and Safari. There’s a video on that Google blog post that shows best how it works, but that video is inexplicably not on YouTube and doesn’t appear to be easily embeddable. (Weird. Google always puts its product/feature videos on YouTube.) You can see it in action now by reading any Forbes.com article on your mobile device; and here’s a screenshot showing the recommendation in action: Here’s how Google explains … [Read more...] about Google+ Adds Content Recommendations For Mobile Websites
