The Most Engaged Population In Europe Is Dutch But The Future Is Russian

Comscore Media Metrix shares lots of fabulous data — but their most recent release of data relating to May was amongst the richest they’ve ever released to the public. Interesting at first sight, is the fact that the Netherlands are the most engaged population online (as you can see in the chart below) beating the Turkish by a small margin. Engagement in this context means the number of page views per month per average visitor. I was disappointed to note that my other family home of Austria is at the bottom of the league (probably because it’s a very beautiful country and time is spent outdoors) but most of the rest of the engagement chart fits with what I might expect. Further analysis of the data, however, produces some fascinating insights. Those of us that work in search marketing are well used to talking about “Internet penetration” meaning the availability of an Internet connection as a percentage of the total population. Comscore’s data … [Read more...] about The Most Engaged Population In Europe Is Dutch But The Future Is Russian

Stop Treating Your Website Like A Broken Old Boat

There are two prevailing mentalities when it comes to the investments we make in business. First, there are the investments we make in our future: things we build on, knowing our initial investment is just the beginning. We see our children this way, to draw a personal example. Ask a boat owner if they know this feeling. How Does Your Business See Its Website? The purpose of web analytics is to look at our websites and our businesses as maleable, dynamic creatures, constantly in need of improvement and encouragement. Websites are like innocent little babies, sometimes ugly (and like babies, we aren’t always honest about this), sometimes cute, but most of the time, they are in need of a lot of attention so they don’t just sit there and poop their pants all the time. Website analytics plays a key role in our parenting. It’s how we observe the site, correct its behavior, socialize it, help it develop its interpersonal skills, etc. When you look at your site like a boat, … [Read more...] about Stop Treating Your Website Like A Broken Old Boat

How Russian And Chinese Investors Are Dominating The Web Outside North America

Have you heard of Digital Sky Technologies (DST)? Chances are that until the last few weeks, you’d never registered the name but you now know there is some connection with Facebook? In fact, Digital Sky Technologies is a Russian Moscow-based investment firm which already owned some 1.96% of Facebook, which it bought for some $200m in 2009, and with the most recent $125m investment it now has a 10% stake in the social network. But if I told you it owned ICQ (all of it) and has stakes in Groupon and Zynga — you might be starting to think that we should all learn some more about Digital Sky’s portfolio: Mail.ru — DST wholly owns this having acquired it in 2006. It is the largest free e-mail service of the Russian web. A London IPO is planned for some time in the near future. Mail.ru also offers a search facility and was once one of the largest search destinations in Russia — although it provided the search facilities via the largest Russian search engine … [Read more...] about How Russian And Chinese Investors Are Dominating The Web Outside North America

Russian Search Engine Yandex Launches Free Analytics Tool To Track Metrics For Its 25 Apps

Russia’s largest search engine confirmed its new mobile app analytics solution was built to work on Android, iOS and Windows Phone platforms. With 25 different apps “enjoyed by millions” on various mobile devices, Yandex says: The main reason why we made an app stats tool from scratch, instead of using any of those currently available on market, is that we wanted a reliable, as well as quick and easy, way to learn about the audience and usage of each of the 25 apps that we’ve made so far. None of the analytics solutions could offer us the answer to our questions about our apps stats in real-time. Yandex claims its analytics tool allows developers to build reports based on a number of parameters, including: users’ country and users interface language, app versions, operating systems, screen resolution, connection type, user actions, and session details. Google settles Russian antitrust case over default Android apps

Google and Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) have settled the antitrust case focused on the pre-installation of Google apps on Android handsets. It was initiated following a complaint by Yandex roughly two years ago. In 2015, FAS found that the required pre-installation of apps on Android phones in Russia was anti-competitive. The following year FAS imposed a nearly $8 million fine for the violation, which the settlement doesn’t vacate. The settlement also comes after an unsuccessful legal challenge by Google. The following will change in Russia under the settlement terms: Google will no longer demand exclusivity of its applications on Android-based devices in Russia. Google will be obliged not to restrict pre-installation of any competing search engines and applications (including on the default home screen). Google will refrain from stimulating pre-installation of the Google search as the only general search engine. Google will no longer enforce the parts of … [Read more...] about Google settles Russian antitrust case over default Android apps
