Google Mobile Gets “What’s Nearby,” Voice Search Expands & “Goggles” Search By Snapping Pictures
The Google Search Evolution event today featured a fair amount of discussion of the impact of mobile on the future direction of search and the user experience. There was a flurry of announcements about mobile products and feature upgrades, summarized on the Google Mobile Blog. Danny live-blogged the event. Vic Gundotra, Vice President of Engineering, discussed how mobile and the intrinsic features of increasingly powerful smartphones are going to change search: processing power, location awareness, voice and the camera. In fact Gundotra discussed how Google is seeking to integrate location awareness more deeply into everything its doing online and on the handset. After the general remarks that “we may be at the beginning of the beginning” of a new era of computing and search, he turned to the product announcements: Voice Search with More Languages Gundotra explained that Google Voice Search has dramatically improved since launch and that recently the company added support … [Read more...] about Google Mobile Gets “What’s Nearby,” Voice Search Expands & “Goggles” Search By Snapping Pictures
Up Close With Google’s Search By Image: Hits, Misses & More
Earlier this week at its Inside Search event, Google announced a new way to search the web called Search By Image. Rather than enter a text query, Search By Image lets you begin your search with an image and Google will (try to) tell you what it is and show visually similar images. Search By Image isn’t the first start-with-an-image search engine, and isn’t even Google’s first version of this kind of search tool. (TinEye has offered reverse image search since May 2008, and Google Goggles was Google’s first search-by-image tool back in 2009.) But Google is the big and new kid on the block, so we’ve taken an in-depth look at how Search By Image works — including when it’s at its best and worst. How Google Search By Image Works Search By Image is available now at images.google.com or via the “Images” tab in the left-side menu on Google.com. You should see a small camera icon on the far right side of the search bar. There are several … [Read more...] about Up Close With Google’s Search By Image: Hits, Misses & More
Google Product Search To Become Google Shopping, Use Pay-To-Play Model
is getting a new name, Google Shopping, and a new business model where only merchants that pay will be listed. It’s the first time Google will decommission a search product that previously listed companies for free. The company says the change will improve the searcher experience, but it will also likely raise new worries that Google may further cut free listings elsewhere. “This is about delivering the best answers for people searching for products and helping connect merchants with the right customers,” said Sameer Samat, vice president of product management for Google Shopping, when explaining that by moving to an all-paid model, Google believes it will have better and more trustworthy data that will improve the shopping search experience for its users. Perhaps this will be so; perhaps not. We’ll only have a better idea when the transformation is complete. The process begins now with experiments, launches more fully in the summer and will take through the … [Read more...] about Google Product Search To Become Google Shopping, Use Pay-To-Play Model
How Search Works On Google Glass
There are seven voice commands built into this first “Explorers” edition of Google Glass. Two of those six are search-related: “google…” and “get directions to….” The others are “take a photo,” “record a video,” “send a message to,” “make a call to” and “start a Hangout with.” There’s also the predictive search aspect of Google Now, where the device automatically shows me the kind of information Google thinks I’m looking for. So, the chances are pretty strong that a good amount of Google Glass activity is going to involve searching. Or “googling” as Glass suggests. Yep. Even though Google continues to protect its trademark by opposing the use of “google” as a substitute for “search,” the first command available in Glass isn’t “search,” it’s “google.” And in lowercase, even, like the rest of … [Read more...] about How Search Works On Google Glass
