Today is your lucky day! Due to the volume of inquiries surrounding this year’s awards competition, the deadline for entries in the Search Engine Land Awards competition has been extended until Friday, August 4th at 11:59PM PT. No further extensions will be granted so be sure to get your submissions completed on time. The judges are eager to begin the review process as we expect the level of competition to set even higher standards for our already tough program. Speaking of judges, this is also a good time to share a little more about how our judging process works. Since we ask for a significant amount of detail and supporting data in our application process, your (and your clients’) privacy and sensitivities around confidential data is extremely important for us to address. That’s why we keep our primary panel of judges — those who review the main campaign initiative categories — limited to full-time employees and contractors of Third Door Media (our … [Read more...] about Deadline extended for entries in the 2017 Search Engine Land Awards

Avoiding Search Engine Penalties or Getting Out From Under Them
There is not a week that goes by that I do not come across someone posting on a forum stating that they have been penalized or even banned by Google, Yahoo or another search engine. Most claims do not have much merit. The individual just assumes they have been penalized because their site is not ranking well for search terms they think it should or they don't know how to check if their site is indexed in a search engine. Even seeing a grayed out PageRank meter in the Google toolbar can lead people to assume the unthinkable - "I've been banned!" However there are times when a web site has indeed come under some kind of penalty or has been completely removed from a search index for one reason or another. In this article we will look at ways to avoid such penalties as well as ways to redeem yourself if you have experienced this misfortune. … [Read more...] about Avoiding Search Engine Penalties or Getting Out From Under Them

Say goodbye to Google: 14 alternative search engines
Well it’s been a big week for search, I think we can all agree. If you’re a regular Google user (65% of you globally) then you’ll have noticed some changes, both good and bad. I won’t debate the merits of these improvements, we’ve done that already here: Google kills Right Hand Side Ads and here: Google launches Accelerated Mobile Pages, but there’s a definite feeling of vexation that appears to be coming to a head. Deep breath… As the paid search space increases in ‘top-heaviness’, as organic results get pushed further off the first SERP, as the Knowledge Graph scrapes more and more publisher content and continues to make it pointless to click through to a website, and as our longstanding feelings of unfairness over Google’s monopoly and tax balance become more acute, now more than ever we feel there should be another, viable search engine alternative. There was a point not that long ago … [Read more...] about Say goodbye to Google: 14 alternative search engines
Facebook One Of The Top Search Engines? I Dunno About That!
I shouldn’t — but I couldn’t resist doing a quick poke at Facebook’spronouncementthat it is the "most used people search engine on the web." Really? Accordingto? Facebook gives some stats that perhaps back up this claim, but only if youconsider Facebook a people search engine. I don’t. Not yet. It’s hard for me to consider something a people searchengine when, untillast September, it didn’t allow most people to actually register with it. Ofcourse, I don’t need comScore’slatest statsto tell me Facebook is taking off since then. The drip-drip-drip of peopleasking to be my friend since I joined up a few weeks ago lets me know it isgaining ground. It is a drip-drip, however, not a firehose blast. I’d wager most people Iactually know personally are not on it. Curious, I just searched for threecollege friends. None of them are there. I’m not surprised, since I was incollege so long ago we didn’t have email addresses … [Read more...] about Facebook One Of The Top Search Engines? I Dunno About That!
