Talking about a content delivery network and SEO in the same sentence is a tricky one. A CDN can be a huge benefit to SEO, or it can hurt your site immensely, and it all comes down to configuration. How a CDN WorksA content delivery network is sort of like an augment or a superpower for your website. It’s a way to make a $10-a-month web hosting package feel like a $100-a-month package. So what is it, and how does it work? When you have a website, your website is hosted on a web server owned by your web host. The host’s server might be physically located in one position, or they might have three or four mirrors around the country or around the world, but the results are the same. Whenever someone wants to load your website, they send a message to the host’s server, which responds with the website data. This is fine if, say, the data center is in Utah and the web user is in Ohio. It still works fine if the web user is in Florida. It works a little less fine if the user is … [Read more...] about Can a Content Delivery Network Hurt Your SEO?

It's been well over a year since I first wrote about how the social networking frenzy is impacting the personal and professional reputations of Internet users. Since then, we've continued to see stories about how many companies are now running Google searches before hiring applicants. In fact, it's becoming more and more common for companies to decide not to hire someone based on what they've found in a potential hire's online profile. As I was looking around Facebook a few weeks ago, I found myself wondering if we're reaching the point where we not only have to worry about our own profiles, but the profiles of the people we associate ourselves with. I've watched the online marketing industry flock to sites like Facebook and LinkedIn over the past year and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed the race to show off one's "social power" by building up massive lists of contacts. I've come across more than one profile associated with 500+ or even 1000+ contacts and thought to … [Read more...] about Are Your Social Networking Connections Hurting YOUR Reputation?
Our fourth Search Marketing Expo event in the UK is just two weeks away, and it’s shaping up to be an exceptional show. You can expect the great content, keynote, networking activities and meals for which SMX events are famous. But this year we’ve added a new – and we think very compelling – focus to the show: SMX London is now SMX Advanced London, taking place on May 17 & 18 in Covent Garden. Why an advanced focus? While most of our SMX events have had a mixture of basic through advanced content, we’ve only run one conference that was totally dedicated to the needs of experienced professionals: SMX Advanced, held in June in Seattle each year. As my partner Danny Sullivan describes it: “SMX Advanced is for vets. It gives them the unique opportunity to learn and discuss search marketing topics in a group setting without any time lost bringing others up to speed. As I’ve said before, one of the best metaphors is that the show is a place … [Read more...] about Exceptional Sessions, Great Networking & Barak Keynote
With Google upping the ante on speed of delivery as a factor in relevance ranking, even medium to smaller sites may now need to consider a content delivery network to supplement the performance of their primary servers. A content delivery network (CDN) is a network of computers used to increase the speed of delivery of a website to users, as well as decrease the load on the originating web server. A CDN has delivery servers placed at data centers all over world. Each of these servers is fed data from one originating web server, the content of which is then transferred to every server in the network. When a user accesses a website, they are viewing a copy of the website served from one of these networked computers. The primary benefit of using a CDN is reducing load on the originating server. Each user is served data from a computer the CDN sees as the closest to their computer. This decreases the bandwidth used by your servers. The second benefit is that this proximity greatly reduces … [Read more...] about Google Demands Speed—Do You Need A Content Delivery Network?
