Enhanced Campaigns: Google’s Grand Unification Theory

Early last century, Albert Einstein turned the world of established physics upside down when he introduced his theories of special and general relativity. Newton’s Laws, which had successfully driven the work of physicists for hundreds of years, were usurped by Einstein’s new theories. At the heart of Einstein’s FIELD theories, which describe space-time, was his famous formula: Okay, maybe you’ve never seen that before, but it is famous among theoretical physicists and cosmologists. The lambda, (Λ) is the cosmological constant, which we’ll touch on later in this article. Einstein’s most famous formula is, of course, E = mc2 which describes the conversion of mass to energy, as in that which happens in an atomic explosion. It took the world of physics years to figure out what Einstein was even talking about, and then even more years for experts to work out whether he was right or wrong. As it turns out, Einstein was more right than wrong. … [Read more...] about Enhanced Campaigns: Google’s Grand Unification Theory

How Prototype Theory Influences a Social Media Strategy

Social media experts, typically self-appointed, trumpet their belief that social media marketing (SMM) “throws out the rules” and is a “game-changer.” However, the extent to which SMM can change the rules depends very much on how thoughtful its practitioners are, and how well they understand the connection between the various ways people associate things and ideas, even at a neurological level. One scientific approach involves mastery of a new approach to linguistics, called Prototype Theory. Prototype Theory: The Basics The generally accepted thesis about how we put things in category buckets and how we decide whether some object falls into a specific category involves a yes/no examination of characteristic attributes of the thing being described. For example, we would identify some big animal as a cow by evaluating whether it meets the criteria that defines a cow, like “four legged,” “has hooves,” “does not have feathers,” … [Read more...] about How Prototype Theory Influences a Social Media Strategy

Ask Jumps, Google Slips and Yahoo Leads American Customer Satisfaction Index for Search

For the first time, Yahoo has beaten Google in the annual University of Michigan American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). The survey measures U.S. consumer satisfaction across a broad range of business and product categories including “e-business,” which covers search. The survey asks a statistically representative sample of consumers to rate their experiences with portals and search engines according to a number of criteria, which produces an overall satisfaction score on a 100 point scale. The search/portal category has been rated since 2000. Until this year, Google has always lead the ASCI since the first year the index included it, in 2002. Among the top engines, Ask saw the largest gains in satisfaction (5.6%) while Yahoo emerged as the overall winner, beating Google by a single point. But Yahoo and Google were trending in opposite directions, with Yahoo gaining and Google losing a roughly equivalent percentage (see below). AOL saw the biggest decline in … [Read more...] about Ask Jumps, Google Slips and Yahoo Leads American Customer Satisfaction Index for Search

SearchDNA Joins Crowded Field Of Link Analysis Tools

At SMX East today, Linkdex is introducing its new SearchDNA tool — a link analysis tool that the company says goes deeper than the already crowded field that it’s competing against. While some link tools only show up to 1,000 links (think Yahoo Site Explorer), Linkdex says SearchDNA has a database of about one trillion links. It gets that data via a partnership with Majestic SEO, which also offers its own link analysis tools. So, what makes SearchDNA different if they’re using the same data? According to Linkdex CEO John Straw, SearchDNA goes beyond compiling a list of links and does an SEO analysis on the pages where links are found. That analysis includes about 25 key ranking factors that it uses to determine the “link authority” of pages with inbound links to a URL. The tool allows users to filter and sort inbound links based on those factors — things such as whether the keyword appears in the page title, in H1 tags, in the URL, and so forth. … [Read more...] about SearchDNA Joins Crowded Field Of Link Analysis Tools

The January Smartphone Story: Android Slips, Apple Gains, Feature Phones Fade

The US smartphone story has been pretty consistent for well over a year: Android is now on more than 50 percent of US smartphones, followed by iOS. All others are losing share. Samsung and Apple continue to battle for the top two OEM positions in the market (and around the world). January data from comScore largely repeat and affirm this story line. According to comScore’s survey data Android had a 52.3 percent market share in January. However the Google operating system slipped a bit (1.3 points) as the iPhone gained. Apple’s share grew 3.5 percent to 37.8 percent. The US is probably the iPhone’s strongest market. BlackBerry, Microsoft and Nokia’s Symbian all lost share, a trend that has been consistent for months. On the hardware front, Apple was the top individual smartphone manufacturer in the US, followed by Samsung. HTC and Google’s Motorola lost share — although LG (buoyed by the Nexus 4) gained. ComScore has essentially stopped reporting … [Read more...] about The January Smartphone Story: Android Slips, Apple Gains, Feature Phones Fade
