Coming back from our SMXAdvanced conference last week, I found myself doing some soul searching. Howwas it that some people could wonder if advanced SEO means spamming searchengines? And have I been contributing to this confusion? For the record — no,advanced SEO doesn’t mean you have to spam. Not in my book. But as SEO hasmatured, I find myself wondering if the importance of good site architecture —search engine friendly design — has become lost as an advanced techniqueitself. And has the battle for links caused us to segment too much intodifferent halves of an SEO "house?" Is SEO splitting apart? Too Blackhat? Lisa Baroneblogged on Friday in her review of the show that it seemed moreblack/grayhat than last year. In particular, she was struck by the very samething at the show that struck me. Microsoft’s Nathan Buggia, leading off inhis presentationfor Search Friendly Development on the second day, opened by saying he’d talkedto some people the … [Read more...] about No, Advanced SEO Does Not Mean Spamming

Google's Gary Illyes issued a reminder this week that sending automated searches to Google is against the Terms of Service. This is not a new rule, but it appears that the issue has been on the minds of Google's Webmaster Trends Analysts as of late. Google's new system for indexing content on the Internet, Caffeine, went live June 8. It used to be that Google updated its indexes every couple weeks. Now it's darn close to real time. This is good news if you update your content regularly. Since Google now refreshes its index much more frequently, it will be constantly looking for the most relevant results to display for any given search phrase. Wait a minute! What if I'm not adding content to my website regularly? While this isn't an algorithmic adjustment in how websites are ranked, I'd say this new development from Google isn't going to have many positive implications for you. In fact, over time, you may find your site slipping as others who do have a stream of content start to fly past you (or at least show up in the media links in the SERPS above the traditional website links). With Google indexing more content than ever before, there are greater odds that somebody somewhere is producing more fresh content on the same … [Read more...] about The Need for Speed: What Does Google’s Caffeine Mean to You?
You might think after I recommended last time that search marketers use local domains, that this post is a follow-on and that the market reaction is such that everyone has dashed out and started buying domains?
