Yahoo has announced it will acquire Right Media, which operates an auction-based display ad exchange calledRemix Media. The move is widely seen asYahoo fighting back against Google’s recent plans to acquire DoubleClick, whichitself is seen as Google jumping more firmly into the display ad network game. Both moves to me underscore how neither players’ own existing ad networks haveapparently been good enough for their display ambitions. AdSense has been offering display advertisingsince May 2004.That’s when advertisers were allowed to provide images and other display unitsthat AdSense publishers could choose to carry. It refined this to allow "sitetargeting" on a CPM basis, back in June 2005. Those looking to push a branding message could buyimpressions, rather than clicks, and have them hit particular sites (ironically,CPCand CPA pricing wereboth recently introduced). Over the past few months, I’ve been testing various Android phones. Overall, the platform has continued to improve, to the degree that I can easily swap an Android phone for my iPhone 4 and not feel a loss. But unlike the one-size-fits-all iPhone, each Android phone has its own individual characteristics. Below, a look at how three different Android cousins performed for me and measured up against the iPhone. From Windows Mobile To Apple’s iPhone… First, some background. I’m a long-time smartphone user. My first was back in 2004, a Windows Mobile flip phone. I went through various Windows Mobile phones over the years, such as the Verizon XV6700 pictured below. But when the iPhone 3G came out, the 3G issue was solved — and I discovered that the on-screen keyboard really was so good that I didn’t need a physical one. I jumped mobile platforms. Android, The Early … [Read more...] about Droid 2, Samsung Fascinate & Google Nexus S

Though the dog days of summer are here, retailers know the holidays are fast approaching. And if you’re in retail, no holiday plan is complete without considering your strategy for selling on Amazon this season. Defining The Benefits When talking to retailers, I usually take a moment to ask what they expect to get out of selling on Amazon — not in terms of dollars and cents, or even order volume, but in terms of what business need they think it fills. It’s interesting how often retailers tell me they’re selling on Amazon to acquire customers. Amazon is an incredibly strong channel, but it is not a good vehicle for customer acquisition for retailers. It is, however, a great place to pick up some additional revenue, help turn over product, and grow the bottom line (especially in the holiday season). For brands, it’s quite the opposite. Search engine marketing’s meteoric rise over the last decade is due, in large part, to the superiority of query-level targeting as compared to other online advertising channels. Types Of Online Targeting Before I delve into the specific targeting features of online marketing channels, let me suggest a framework for evaluation. Broadly speaking, there are five types of online targeting currently available to online marketers: Query – what is the user searching for? Location – where is the user located? Time – what time of day, day of week, and … [Read more...] about AdWords vs. Google Display Network vs. Programmatic Display Targeting
