Is “Yellow Pages” Becoming An Obsolete Concept?
The term “Yellow Pages” has been a literal description of a business directory product and the name for the industry which has produced it for over a hundred years. Rapid evolution of internet media seems to be revoking the conceptual connection between printed pages which are yellow and sources for finding local businesses. So, is the “Yellow Pages” name itself becoming obsolete? As a product transfers from one medium or evolutionary stage to another, it’s normal to try to adapt its legacy nomenclature to fit the new version—all that promotional good will built upon the old product name in the past can be leveraged to promote the new version of the product. In some cases the product name will continue to be used into the future. However in other cases, the marketplace’s devotion to the legacy name begins to disconnect, and eventually the legacy name becomes obsolete. I think there’s reason to believe this has been happening with the … [Read more...] about Is “Yellow Pages” Becoming An Obsolete Concept?
Print Yellow Pages More Trusted Than Search Engines & Social Networks
The San Francisco Ban San Francisco has effectively banned print yellow pages delivery. The city recently passed an ordinance that requires residents to “opt-in” to receive print yellow pages. In other words, if they don’t ask for the books, they won’t get them on their doorsteps. The ordinance is fueled in part by the perception that people no longer use or want the print yellow pages. San Francisco says it’s trying to reduce waste and “blight.” The Local Search Association, formerly the Yellow Pages Association, says the ordinance unfairly targets one advertising medium and has sued. Though conducted before the ordinance was past, a new study from the LSA gives it some pro-yellow pages findings. Yearly Usage Nearly Matches Search; Monthly Much Less The study, conducted by research firm Burke among 8,000 US adults over a year long period, gave yellow pages (combined print and internet) more usage that internet search engines, with 84% saying … [Read more...] about Print Yellow Pages More Trusted Than Search Engines & Social Networks
Are Yellow Pages Toast? Four Years Later We Review Ad Value
In 2007, I took some heat for pointing out that Google Trends showed declining searches for “yellow pages” while theorizing that this indicated reducing consumer interest in print and online YP sites. About four years later, we can now look back and see whether this turned out to be a valid prediction, and also reflect on what value YP may still have for advertisers. When I wrote that earlier article, I was aware that connecting a major shift in overall consumer behavior to a graphed trendline of searches in Google was a little loose in terms of causality. There are many reasons why people search for a particular phrase, and many reasons why cumulative searches for the phrase can rise or fall. (Not to mention, there is uncertainty about what the actual volume of searches is in the graphs since Google obscures volume amounts, and there can be error in assuming that Google users reflect the same search patterns of users who may search elsewhere, such as in Bing.) I had some … [Read more...] about Are Yellow Pages Toast? Four Years Later We Review Ad Value
Four Key Reasons To Reconsider Today’s Yellow Pages For Local Marketing
Last week in this column, Chris Silver Smith shared a thoughtful take on the state of Yellow Pages print and online offerings and whether they are worth the investment to local businesses. I applaud Chris for providing an in-depth overview of trends in the industry, and want to offer some additional thoughts and context for readers to consider when making a decision about using Yellow Pages products. Without a doubt, the Yellow Pages space is in a state of transformation. Research has found that fewer people are using print directories in both numbers and frequency than they have previously, and a multitude of new platforms ranging from the Web and mobile directories to iPhone and iPad apps and daily deals offerings are fragmenting the way consumers make purchasing decisions. Where it used to be easy to reach your intended consumer through a small number of media channels, there are now many options for a small business advertiser. Yellow Pages players have responded by introducing new … [Read more...] about Four Key Reasons To Reconsider Today’s Yellow Pages For Local Marketing
