11 extraordinary uses of Augmented Reality (AR)

Jess Butcher, the director and co-founder of augmented reality app Blippar, is speaking at our Shift London event in May, so to prepare for this occasion, we thought we’d get fully immersed in the world of AR. Put simply, AR is the technology that superimposes computer generated imagery onto the real world when looked at through a portable device. But, as marketers have discovered, AR can be so much more. AR has not only succeeded where QR codes failed, but it has quickly shut down any opinion that its technology is gimmicky. No longer is AR the stuff of ‘oh look at this funny animation protruding out of a cola can’. Now genuinely useful experiences can be achieved to help your customers, clients and service providers in a real-life practical way. Let’s take a look at some of these experiences… The first three examples are taken from Blippar’s own case studies: Maybelline, L’Oreal To promote a new line of nail polish, Maybelline ran print ads … [Read more...] about 11 extraordinary uses of Augmented Reality (AR)

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on Search Engine Land and from other places across the web. SEO Industry Cries Foul Over Google SEO ‘Services’ A vocal contingent of search engine optimizers is up in arms today, saying Google is “offering SEO consulting services.” There are posts on Sphinn here and here, not to mention plenty of related tweets. 11 Ways It Affects Digital Marketers

Tim O’Reilly (like me, as you’ll see below) seems to believe we’re in a bit of a bubble that’s set to burst, even though, as he walked in to deliver his keynote at the Web 2.0 conference, the stock markets were in the middle of a rebound, vaulting up about 7% in a 26-hour period. Notwithstanding the current stampede to the entrance, if you will, brought about by federal governments pumping hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of liquidity into the system — and a ban on short-selling all 799 financial stocks tradeable on the U.S. markets — it’s a fair bet that we’re in for tough economic times. O’Reilly noted that a financial bubble seems to go hand in hand with a “reality bubble.” When the best and the brightest are working on sheep-throwing apps and “iBeer,” isn’t there something wrong with our priorities? Maybe that’s a separate discussion. But when either bubble bursts, chances are we … [Read more...] about 11 Ways It Affects Digital Marketers

Why email is taking center stage in marketing innovation

Most marketers plan to maintain or increase their investments in marketing innovation this year. But here’s the catch: They’re hedging their bets by expanding innovation in reliable channels like email rather than rolling the dice on unproven marketing tactics. Email marketing is a prime target for innovation in 2017 Marketing innovation is a top priority for marketers this year, according to “The 2017 Yes Lifecycle Marketing Channel Report” (registration required) from Yesmail, my employer. Across the board, we’re seeing a renewed emphasis on marketing as a driver for growth. Nearly all marketers (99 percent) reported that they will either increase or maintain their marketing budgets in 2017 — and a large share of these resources will be devoted to innovative tactics and technologies. The push for innovation is particularly evident in marketers’ planned spending targets. For example, technology innovation ranks as the most important … [Read more...] about Why email is taking center stage in marketing innovation
