Google’s Gary Illyes had an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit. When people asked him about search engine optimization, Gary Illyes advised webmasters to stick to the basics. Who is Gary Illyes? Gary Illyes has been with Google for over 8 years, always working on Web Search. He worked on most parts of search: Googlebot, Caffeine, as well as ranking and serving systems that don’t have public names. He was very clear about advanced search engine optimization techniques: “I really wish SEOs went back to the basics (i.e. MAKE THAT DAMN SITE CRAWLABLE) instead of focusing on silly updates and made up terms by the rank trackers, and that they talked more with the developers of the website once done with the first part of this sentence.” Before working on PageRank sculpting and other ‘advanced’ techniques, it is much more important to make sure that search engines can crawl your web pages. The website audit tool in SEOprofiler helps you to check crawlability … [Read more...] about Google’s Gary Illyes: stick to the SEO basics

The other day, I saw a couple complaints from higher profile SEOs that Google is not doing a good job with preventing spammy PDF content from showing up in the Google search results. Jennifer Slegg posted on Twitter saying "I wish Google would do something with all this PDF spam in the search results." Then Pedro Dias, former Googler, posted also on Twitter, "I wish Google would do something with all this spam I keep finding. I keep reporting and it's still there, for years... I even got a client that admitted to manipulation, never got hit for 1+ years."Gary Illyes from Google said he wants to see examples of this spam and wrote "That's frustrating. I BET if you knew someone at Google, at least some of them could get looked into." In short, he personally wants to look into these cases, so if you see them, let him know on Twitter, I guess. Here are those tweets: Do you have examples of PDF spam in Google? Share them.Forum discussion at Twitter. … [Read more...] about Google Search Quality Suffering From PDF Spam? Let Them Know.
This month’s Brighton SEO delegates all hoped for Google’s Gary Illyes to enlighten them on the major talking points in search this year. They weren’t disappointed. Google algorithm updates are frequently on the minds of SEOs and webmasters, and have been a hot topic for years. We are always on tenterhooks, waiting for the next change that could damage our site’s rankings. We are never able to rest, always at risk of being penalized by the next animal to enter Google’s zoo of updates. The name Google Fred then began to circulate following a chat on Twitter between Barry Schwartz and Google’s Gary Illyes where Gary joked about future updates being named Fred. We safely assumed there was an adjustment to the algorithm as Google confirmed there are updates happening every day. As usual, Google did not confirm any details … [Read more...] about The last word on Fred from Google’s Gary Illyes
