Or that 88% of customers trust online reviews from strangers as much as they would a recommendation by a friend? With influencer worth expected to grow to more than $10B by 2020, it should come as no surprise that growing numbers of people are focused on establishing themselves as Influencers on social media sites. While many influencer marketing advocates are looking toward Instagram, savvy marketers are also diving headfirst into Pinterest. Just this past fall, Pinterest announced its efforts to share API data with eight influencer marketing platforms, making it easier to track and value Influencer collaboration efforts. At the same time, with brands continuing to see a steady decline in referral traffic from social media channels like Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest referral traffic continues to climb. Google’s Gary Illyes had an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit. When people asked him about search engine optimization, Gary Illyes advised webmasters to stick to the basics. Who is Gary Illyes? Gary Illyes has been with Google for over 8 years, always working on Web Search. He worked on most parts of search: Googlebot, Caffeine, as well as ranking and serving systems that don’t have public names. He was very clear about advanced search engine optimization techniques: “I really wish SEOs went back to the basics (i.e. MAKE THAT DAMN SITE CRAWLABLE) instead of focusing on silly updates and made up terms by the rank trackers, and that they talked more with the developers of the website once done with the first part of this sentence.” Before working on PageRank sculpting and other ‘advanced’ techniques, it is much more important to make sure that search engines can crawl your web pages. The website audit tool in SEOprofiler helps you to check crawlability … [Read more...] about Google’s Gary Illyes: stick to the SEO basics
More than once during his recent AMA on Reddit, Google’s Gary Illyes advised SEOs to stick to the basics. In particular, that means making sites more crawlable.A question was asked about his thoughts on the future of SEO and what will continue to play a role in ranking websites.Illyes responded by emphatically stating that he wants to see SEOs go back to the basics. To that end, he also recommends focusing less on updates and metrics developed by rank tracking software. Here is Illyes’ full statement:“i really wish SEOs went back to the basics (i.e. MAKE THAT DAMN SITE CRAWLABLE) instead of focusing on silly updates and made up terms by the rank trackers, and that they talked more with the developers of the website once done with the first part of this sentence.”Illyes reiterated that statement further down the thread when asked about his favorite SEO conspiracy theory.Generally, he dislikes all conspiracy theories, because they’re evidence that SEOs are not … [Read more...] about Google’s Gary Illyes Urges SEOs to Stick to the Basics
The other day, I saw a couple complaints from higher profile SEOs that Google is not doing a good job with preventing spammy PDF content from showing up in the Google search results. Jennifer Slegg posted on Twitter saying "I wish Google would do something with all this PDF spam in the search results." Then Pedro Dias, former Googler, posted also on Twitter, "I wish Google would do something with all this spam I keep finding. I keep reporting and it's still there, for years... I even got a client that admitted to manipulation, never got hit for 1+ years."Gary Illyes from Google said he wants to see examples of this spam and wrote "That's frustrating. I BET if you knew someone at Google, at least some of them could get looked into." In short, he personally wants to look into these cases, so if you see them, let him know on Twitter, I guess. Here are those tweets: Do you have examples of PDF spam in Google? Share them.Forum discussion at Twitter. … [Read more...] about Google Search Quality Suffering From PDF Spam? Let Them Know.

The conversation is due to start at about 5:00 p.m. PT, so feel free to come back then and refresh this article page for our live blog coverage. Okay, we’re about to begin. As always, I’ll use “DS” for what Danny Sullivan says and “GI” for what Gary Illyes says. And I’ll try to insert some good tweets from our audience, too. Follow along as we get going! DS: I thought we’d start off with something easy, so could you just explain everything about RankBrain to us. (Laughter) Seriously, is it really a ranking factor? GI: If this is easy, I’m in trouble. I will stick to what we … [Read more...] about Google’s Gary Illyes talks RankBrain, Penguin update & more
