Imagine my shock when I used Bing to search for “Where to buy knockoff products in New York” and found a treasure trove of information on the web leading me to an apparently little-known area of New York City where such products are available around Canal Street: Imagine my even further shock to discover that in today’s US congressional hearing about fending off such intellectual property theft, no one apparently asked what Bing was doing to stop this. No one seems to have asked why these major companies are hosting this information and how to stop them, either. Piracy Galore In New York City! Nor, does it appear, that US government, New York state or New York City authorities have acted to close this area down. Why, in a few simple searches on Twitter, I can find people talking about getting fake goods on Canal within the past few days. Is the area unknown to the authorities? No. According to a New York Times article from 2002 that I found in my Bing search above … [Read more...] about If Google Was New York City & Online Piracy Was Knock-Off Handbags…

Pizza at the Center of New York: Relevancy, Google Local, and Local Results in Organic Searches
When I search for Pizza in New York in Google Local, I’m told that there are about 79,400 results. The top result I see is Lombardi’s Pizza, which is “0.8 mi NE” of the green arrow on the map that points to New York. Exactly what is that green arrow pointing to, and why does Lombardi’s Pizza show up number one? To rephrase that question, how does a site to become the “authority” for a region, for a business type, rather than an authority for a specific location and business name? In Authority Documents for Google’s Local Search, I wrote about a patent application that described how a specific site would show up first when searching for a specific business name and location. The author of that patent filing, Daniel Egnor, was the named inventor on a number of others on local search that came out the same week. This post is about one of those other ones, which is the only one I can recall from Google that talks about identifying specific … [Read more...] about Pizza at the Center of New York: Relevancy, Google Local, and Local Results in Organic Searches
New Yorks Highest Court Upholds States Nexus (Affiliate) Tax Law
The court voted 4-1 today to uphold the state’s 2008 law that says having affiliates in the state gives online retailers “a substantial nexus” and requires them to pay sales tax. Amazon and Overstock had both claimed that the law is unconstitutional. In writing the court’s majority decision, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman said, “The bottom line is that if a vendor is paying New York residents to actively solicit business in this state, there is no reason why that vendor should not shoulder the appropriate tax burden.” Overstock, which shut down its affiliate program in New York state when the 2008 law was enacted, said today that it may appeal the ruling to the US Supreme Court. Amazon said that the nexus tax issue should be handled by Congress and reiterated its support for the Marketplace Fairness Act.
