Tough Love For Microsoft Search

Back in June, I spoke at Microsoft as part of a regular series for those involved with its webmaster tools group and anyone generally interested in search. My talk was called “Tough Love For Microsoft Search,” and I covered various reasons why I felt the company has generally failed to make headway in the space. The core premise is that Microsoft as a company isn’t succeeding at search because it views search as a task it has to do, rather than one it really wants to do. The article below is an adaptation of that presentation. There’s even a movie. Let me say from the outset that there are those within Microsoft who DO love search — in particular, those involved with the search products. I also want them to succeed. Very much so. Google does need a counter-balance, and Microsoft has a quality search product that could provide this. But sadly, I also feel the same people within Microsoft who are so diligently trying to succeed are let down by a company … [Read more...] about Tough Love For Microsoft Search

Google Bad On Privacy? Maybe It’s Privacy International’s Report That Sucks

It’s a bad privacy day for Google, with Privacy International first accusing the company of having the worst privacy performance of any internet service company in a study it has just released and then accusing Google of conducting a smear campaign against it. But if you actually read the report, Privacy International itself comes off bad for putting out a haphazard condemnation of Google. Let’s do the smear campaign accusation first. An Open Letter to Google from the group says that Google is talking to journalists and implying that Privacy International favors Microsoft: Two European journalists have independently told us that Google representatives have contacted them with the claim that “Privacy International has a conflict of interest regarding Microsoft”. I presume this was motivated because Microsoft scored an overall better result than Google in the rankings…. According to our sources, your representative or representatives made particular … [Read more...] about Google Bad On Privacy? Maybe It’s Privacy International’s Report That Sucks

Human-flesh Search Engines Unearth Dark Side of Online Community

Earlier this year, Tom Downey of the New York Times published a fascinating piece entitled, China’s Cyberposse. In the article he discussed a phenomenon that has being going on in China (and other parts of Asia) since 2001, known as “Human-flesh search engine”. Resembling the kind of single issue protest campaigns that the activist network 4-chan is able to achieve, “Human-flesh searches”, originated as a kind of crowd-sourced detective network made up of users of chinese forums and bulletin boards. Their goal – to take justice into their own hands. The original term “human-flesh search engine” was coined to signify a search for information that was conducted and delivered by humans instead of machines. Rather than relying on a computer based algorithm to locate and calculate the relevance of sources, the forums mobilize the community to discover and post the answers to questions which form the wider part of an investigation. Creepily, … [Read more...] about Human-flesh Search Engines Unearth Dark Side of Online Community

The state of influencer marketing in 2016

Before Vine’s popularity declined, Vine stars had transcended the platform to become actual celebrities. How has influencer marketing changed as it’s grown? Justin Bieber has 22 million YouTube subscribers. Rihanna has 21 million. Katy Perry and Eminem, 18 million apiece. These four musicians are among the most famous people on the planet, and none of them has even half the following of Felix Kjellberg. You know, PewDiePie. The Swedish video gamer who made $12 million last year, as the most-followed person on YouTube. Though PewDiePie largely stays away from marketing (though he has partnered with Mountain Dew in the past) the same can’t be said for many of his fellow social media stars-turned-actual stars. Logan Paul, a Vine celebrity who has graced the cover of AdWeek, has worked with Verizon, Nike and Dunkin Donuts. Michelle Phan parlayed a YouTube channel about makeup tutorials into a line of cosmetics with … [Read more...] about The state of influencer marketing in 2016
