More than once during his recent AMA on Reddit, Google’s Gary Illyes advised SEOs to stick to the basics. In particular, that means making sites more crawlable.A question was asked about his thoughts on the future of SEO and what will continue to play a role in ranking websites.Illyes responded by emphatically stating that he wants to see SEOs go back to the basics. To that end, he also recommends focusing less on updates and metrics developed by rank tracking software. Here is Illyes’ full statement:“i really wish SEOs went back to the basics (i.e. MAKE THAT DAMN SITE CRAWLABLE) instead of focusing on silly updates and made up terms by the rank trackers, and that they talked more with the developers of the website once done with the first part of this sentence.”Illyes reiterated that statement further down the thread when asked about his favorite SEO conspiracy theory.Generally, he dislikes all conspiracy theories, because they’re evidence that SEOs are not … [Read more...] about Google’s Gary Illyes Urges SEOs to Stick to the Basics

I attended my first search marketing conference way back in 2006.Back then, digital marketing conferences were still a novelty and SES (Search Engine Strategies) was the place to be.At the time, I was working at a startup and teaching myself everything I could about SEO, Overture and this still relatively “new” platform called AdWords (now Google Ads). What I found at SES was a smart and innovative community of search engine marketers that shared my passion for the industry and were learning from each other. Not only that, the conference was still small enough to have the conference party at the Googleplex in San Jose.I was in heaven.Since then, the available digital marketing conferences have expanded dramatically, as well as the opportunities to take part in panels, presentations, and the anxiety-inducing keynote. For many, public speaking is not easy. And, let’s be honest. It is really difficult to be an effective speaker, let alone presenting to a group of all your … [Read more...] about 9 Expert Tips on How to Become an Effective Conference Speaker

On February 19th DDMA & IAB Nederland hosted their second annual Friends of Search event in Amsterdam, following a very successful Epic Friends of Search last year. I had a great time, and decided to reach out to some of the speakers for a followup epic event review. This was the biggest search event held in the Netherlands with 350 attendees and sold out a month before the event. It was also very successful on Twitter with over 731 tweets from the attendees using the #FOS15 hashtag which also reinforces the impact of having a simple conference hashtag if you want engagement. There was also 198 awesome photos the DDMA team had taken during the event that you can view here. The Friends of Search team even produced a fun little event review summary clip with some of the highlights from the FOS15 event, which is also a great teaser for their 2016 event.
