Ladders Vice President of Marketing Stephanie Chan says she is a marketer at heart. Joining the online career resource for professionals in September of last year, Chan manages all aspects of the website's marketing strategy. "I oversee everything related to consumer, as well as B2B, marketing and sales at Ladders - a big, fun role," says Chan. This month, Chan's team is focused on a campaign that will launch on Sirius and eventually be tested on podcasts. "Most of our marketing is concentrated online, so I'm excited about testing into offline channels and reaching a new audience," says Chan, "At the heart of it, I'd like it to get our name out there in new and effective ways." Before joining Ladders, Chan founded Please and Carrots, a subscription service for learning and development. Prior to starting her own company, Chan led consumer marketing for Time Inc.'s "InStyle" magazine. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University and received her MBA from the Kellogg School of … [Read more...] about Ladders VP of Marketing says working on something meaningful lends purpose to her life

If there’s one thing that’s characterized the digital marketing universe, it’s fragmentation. Marketers use one tool/platform to implement one campaign element, another tool to implement a second, and never the twain shall meet — not in trafficking, and certainly not in reporting. And, of course, there are usually many more than two elements. This Achilles’ heel is starting to pain marketers more than ever now, as their target audiences are engaging with messages on a multitude of devices and expecting consistency. “It’s hard to reach the right audience at the right moment with the right message when every channel requires its own system and you’re patching together, and switching, between ad platforms that aren’t in sync,” said Google’s VP of Display Advertising Neal Mohan in a blog post. This week, Search Engine Journal would like to recognize our digital marketing community in a unique way. There are many great digital marketers out there, but with Armed Forces Day on Saturday, I would like to acknowledge the digital marketers who have direct experience in the Armed Forces or who have family members with direct experience in the Armed Forces. In particular, I asked these digital marketers one question: did your experience or the experience of your family members in the Armed Forces affect your digital marketing career and if so, how? In this post, I would like to share the wonderful answers I received, and I would also like to honor all of those in the digital marketing world and beyond who have offered their services and their lives in the Armed Forces worldwide. Angie Schottmuller, @aschottmuller, Growth Marketing Advisor of Interactive Artisan “I originally wanted to be a doctor/veterinarian and served with the 452d Combat Support Hospital, US Army Reserves, … [Read more...] about Celebrating Our Armed Forces in the Digital Marketing Community
In the last year or so, heads of marketing of several large companies have told me that they are interested in cross channel optimization and want the right media mix recommendation across all their channels, both online and offline. However, as I spoke to many digital marketing teams, I realized that they were not set up for success. In this post, I would like to talk about some best practices for setting up a high performance digital team, in three crucial areas: hiring, team structure and budgeting. As Henry Ford said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” Hiring Go for wills ahead of skills. I have often heard that it is hard to find people with good domain knowledge when it comes to search, display or social media. While I understand the importance of prior experience, I do not think it needs to be emphasized. Search as an industry is less than ten years old, social advertising less than two. Moreover, both are constantly … [Read more...] about Is Your Digital Marketing Team Poised For Success?
