With Rupert Murdoch talking about blocking Google, Jason Calacanis suggests that Murdoch should cut an exclusive deal with Bing. If that doesn’t kill Google, it might at least win Bing a 10% search share or more within 6 months, he argues. I suggest Jason needs a reality check. Here’s one for him. From his post today, Jason writes: I put forth a simple strategy for Microsoft to pursue with Bing in which they would go to content providers like the New York Times or Wall Street Journal and offer them 50% more revenue then they are currently getting from Google search referrals to be exclusively indexed in Bing…. So, for a moment, imagine a world where Bing could say in their TV commercials: “Want to search the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and 3,894 other newspapers and magazine?” “Well, then don’t go to Google because they don’t have them!” “Go to Bing, home of quality content you can trust!” OK, … [Read more...] about Why An Exclusive Wall Street Journal (or News Corp) Deal Wouldn’t Help Bing

Wall Street Journal Hearts Digg
Yesterday, Digg founder Kevin Rose made one of the shortest blog posts in Digg’s history, announcing that the Wall Street Journal has added Digg buttons to its site which in turn give Diggers free access to paid content there. What’s this new deal mean? Let’s take a look. Currently, the majority of the Wall Street Journal’s content is available to paying members only. There are some free articles, but for most stuff, you will get prompted with this screen: Now the Wall Street Journal has added Digg buttons at the bottom of each article. Digg is the only social media news button that is currently on the site. Digg also said that this is not an exclusive deal, which means that we are likely to see more buttons down the road. I wonder if they will actually ever add buttons from another News Corp property called MySpace News (oh yeah, these are only supposed to be for sites that can actually drive you lots of traffic – heh!). The way it seems to work is that … [Read more...] about Wall Street Journal Hearts Digg
Wall Street Journal’s Google traffic drops 44% after pulling out of First Click Free
In February, The Wall Street Journal stopped participating in a program allowing Google visitors to bypass its paywall. The publication has now discovered, as was predicted, that it no longer gets as much traffic from Google. In an interview with Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal reported that its Google traffic plunged 44 percent after leaving the “First Click Free” program. First Click Free allows visitors from Google to access articles that are normally behind paywalls for free, when they click to them from Google’s search results. Many publishers participate in the program because they find the traffic and related ad-revenue offsets potential lost subscription revenue. When a publisher is not in the program, Google cannot fully index the articles it publishes. That means those articles are less likely to appear for a wider range of topics. That can hurt potential traffic from Google. In addition, such articles are also listed with a “subscription” … [Read more...] about Wall Street Journal’s Google traffic drops 44% after pulling out of First Click Free
Google Maps Mobile Gets Street View, Aimed At Helping iOS Users
As expected, Google Maps Mobile has gained Street View photography. The move should further shore up Google as an alternative to the new Apple Maps on iOS 6, which are so inferior to the Google-powered ones on iOS 5 that Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for them last week and suggested Google as an alternative, among other options. Google Maps, accessed through the browser, still won’t be as nice as making use of an actual Google Maps app. Google lacks an app for iOS 6 users apparently because it hasn’t “done anything” yet, as CEO Eric Schmidt said last week. Why hasn’t it done anything? Google’s not providing a reason on the record. But reports are that the company didn’t expect to be dropped from Maps in iOS 6 and is now scrambling to develop its own app. Google’s confirmed to Search Engine Land that Google Maps Mobile was coming on yesterday but not the exact timing. A Wall Street Journal report on yesterday had said it would happen … [Read more...] about Google Maps Mobile Gets Street View, Aimed At Helping iOS Users
Live Blogging The FTC Workshop On Journalism & The Internet
I’m at the FTC’s “Journalism & Internet Age” Workshop in Washington DC today, where we’re expecting addresses from Rupert Murdoch and Arianna Huffington, along with Josh Cohen of Google News and a variety of panels. I’ll be on one of those panels later today. I’m going to do a big live blog of things I find interesting, and you can also watch the webcast via this page. Why is the FTC doing this workshop? FTC has policy functions assigned to it to investigate new developments in the marketplace and make legislative recommendations. With radio, recommended act that made the FCC. Workshop today intended to bring out more facts. “The bottom seems to be falling out of the news business” as consumers shift their habits. Though newspapers were still profitable overall in 2008; TV still main way people get information. But newsrooms of dailies may employ 25% fewer people. Was at the LA Times recently and felt sense of shock at rows of … [Read more...] about Live Blogging The FTC Workshop On Journalism & The Internet
