These days, SEO is changing and growing faster than ever, and our strategies for optimization have to change too. Rather than reverse engineering content that ranks by dissecting Google’s algorithms, we’re starting to find that we need to go beyond finding keywords, instead delving into the meanings behind them. The general industry consensus is that the psychology of user intent is going to grow in importance as we enter the age of semantic search. Today, we’re looking at exactly what semantic search is, what it means for us, and what we can do about it. Semantic Search: What Is It? Essentially, semantic search is an umbrella term for the growing tendency for search engines to factor in user intent, and the wider context for keywords. It’s predicted that this will eventually include a search engine’s ability to infer details from unwritten subtext. For example, you can ask a human “where is the hottest country?” and then ask, “how hot is … [Read more...] about What Does Semantic Search Mean for SEO?

share tweet share pin it e-mail share It’s been just over six weeks since Google officially announced their new ’Hummingbird’ update. Now we’ve had some time to get our heads round the details, what does it mean for SEO experts and digital marketers? Courtesy of Edmund Garman Hello Hummingbird Amit Singal, Senior Vice President of search at Google, first introduced the algorithm as the company’s latest and greatest effort to match the meaning of queries performed by users with the content of documents available on the Internet. This may seem unsurprising: surely, this is the central aim of a search engine? But reading between the lines, it means that Google has received a fuel injection of sorts to make these appropriate matches both more efficient and more effective. During the announcement of the new algorithm at the end of September, it was confirmed that the algorithm wasn’t about to be sprung on unsuspecting … [Read more...] about Life after Google’s Hummingbird algorithm update – what does it all mean? –
The ubiquity of virtual assistants like Siri, Cortana and Alexa, together with improvements in technology, has led to an uptick in voice search queries. I recently participated on a panel at Brand Innovators E-commerce. The title of the panel was “Big Data Meets E-commerce,” moderated by Mike Peralta, COO at MediaMath, and it included panelists from Kraft, Dell and New York Life Insurance. However, what I really started to think about later that day was not just data meets e-commerce, but this idea of Big Data. What really does this all mean and how should we define it? The fact is, data is defined differently by different groups of people – definitions that are driven by their own personal and corporate goals for using the data. From an e-commerce-based company to a search marketer, from display teams within an ad agency to a luxury brand, data is at the center of business decisions today. Yet, while data is used differently, the goal is often the same –to drive more effective and efficient marketing messages through enhanced relevancy and data-driven advertising. For me, I see search data as the highest … [Read more...] about What Does Big Data Mean To You?
As of the August 22, the AMP project now provides the option to build aspects of ecommerce sites, such as product and category pages. It seemed only a matter of time before this would occur, especially after eBay announced the launch of 8 million AMP-enabled pages, but what exactly does it mean, and how should retailers react? What are the key changes for retailers? Anything that can increase conversion rates will always be welcome news for retailers, and the improvements in page load speeds that AMP brings will most likely help to achieve this. Furthermore, Google will display AMP pages in the search results, rather than just in the carousel. It’s important to note that this update does not affect rankings directly (yet), although site speed and on-site engagement metrics, which AMP is focused on, could have an impact on your rankings. Over time, it is also possible that Google will favour sites running AMP as they will cater for the growing mobile audience too. Although AMP … [Read more...] about What does Google AMP mean for ecommerce?
