Recapping Fall Small Business Marketing Unleashed

Just when you think something can't get any better, something sneaks in to surprise you. Back in April when we hosted our first ever Small Business Marketing Unleashed (SBMU) conference, we were astonished at how great the response was. The show was small, but the attendees ranted and raved about the quality of the speakers, the content and the networking. We took those things to heart when we started planning our second show. While we knew it would be tough to top the environment of the first show, (you can't hardly beat a wooded forest retreat and a full scale replica of the Alamo) we were confident we could iron out the minor kinks, bring on a few more speakers and radically expand our list of workshops. Bringing it Home We hosted our first show in Houston, partly because it's Robert's home town. When it came time to decide on a fall location, it was only natural to suggest Columbus...the city Rachel and I call home. I've been wanting to show off my home town for ages, … [Read more...] about Recapping Fall Small Business Marketing Unleashed

How Google Can “Lose” Search Share & Yet Still Stomp Yahoo

comScore’s out with new search market share figures. Yahoo’s up, but did it “game” its growth with new navigational changes? Gaming figures is nothing new. But even if Yahoo effectively did, it’s the search volume — the number of searches — that people should care more about in deciding who’s “winning” and “losing” when it comes to search. Hint: Google dominates. Below, a look at the importance of search volume plus some background on gaming stats and the complexities of comparing figures. Caveats To Live & Love I’ve been covering search share figures for a long time. A very long time — from before Google existed. Before I dive into a post about search share, I’m going to revisit my long-standing advice that I offer anyone: Avoid drawing conclusions based on month-to-month comparisons. Lots of things can cause one month’s figures to be incomparable to another month. It’s better … [Read more...] about How Google Can “Lose” Search Share & Yet Still Stomp Yahoo

Holiday Reputation Management Action Plan

A solid reputation management action plan that anticipates and corrects common problems is a present almost any manager would like to see underneath the Christmas tree. And if you start right now, you could pull together a comprehensive plan to get you through the holidays without a gaffe. Avoiding issues this time of the year is vital, as the Pew Research Center found November-December 2013 sales made up close to 19 percent of all sales that took place during the fall of 2013. That means sales during the holiday season could make or break your business. All of those sales are attached to customers, and every one of those customers has the potential to say nice things or horrible things about the work you’re doing and the products you sell. Clearly, when it comes to consumer exposure and the potential for consumer ire, there’s no more dangerous time than the holiday time. And that means you should start planning now, so you can put those plans to work before the consumers … [Read more...] about Holiday Reputation Management Action Plan

Public Relations For SEO: How To Pitch Journalists

A few years ago, I launched a website called FindHow, and we gave it a full-court press from a PR standpoint. In this series of articles, I’m running through all the best practices we leveraged. In Part 1 and Part 2, we talked about how to convince journalists that your topic is newsworthy, the basics of writing a press release, strategies for targeting journalists and tips for scheduling your announcement. Here, we conclude with tips for pitching journalists and how to work it before, during and after the announcement of your release. Pitching Journalists Before you start, understand two things. First, journalists are human beings – try to put yourself in their place to understand where they are coming from. Hundreds of people are constantly bothering them to try to get their news covered, their editor is probably hounding them for material, and often, they’d really rather be taking their wife or husband out to dinner. So, be respectful of their time and … [Read more...] about Public Relations For SEO: How To Pitch Journalists

Am I KW Crazy? A Guide To Tackling An Ubercompetitive Keyword Strategy

In which I recommend (a very limited) focus on ranking reports . . . I’ve long railed against the stupidity of keyword ranking reports and the insufferable myopic thrashing that occurs when consultants or business units get wound around the axle trying to diagnose a two spot slip for a favorite pet term. (Or worse, a litany of pet terms.) More link juice! More sculpting! More pages! More linkbait! More PageRank! More SEO! If you’d like to learn more about why letting ranking reports dictate your SEO strategy is shortsighted, feel free to read Excuse Me While I Have a Ranking Report Rant. I’d like to offer the one exception to my hatred for ranking reports: The Ubercompetitive Term. This is a phrase that is winnable and can deliver a significant volume of converting traffic – however you may define that conversion. The elusive Ubercompetitive Term, is a phrase that you invest in heavily; coordinating efforts across multiple departments, from marketing to product … [Read more...] about Am I KW Crazy?
