Put simply, UX is important in every part of our daily lives, probably more than most of us even notice. Let’s walk through an example. The 2000 U.S presidential election was extremely contentious. Here are the results: Pay attention to the highlighted “Electoral vote” and “Popular vote” statistics. In the United States, the president wins by getting a majority of electoral college votes. Each of the 50 states has a number of electoral college votes and whichever candidate wins your state gets all of the electoral college votes from your state. The election that year came down to the state of Florida and its electoral college votes. George Bush won the state by 537 votes out of almost six million votes. Crazy! It gets even more interesting. Here is what a ballot looked like in a county in Florida that year: If you were voting for George Bush, which button would you press? The answer is the button marked with an A. Easy. Many variables play an important role when you’re analyzing search engine optimization efforts. This includes factors such as site keywords and content development, as well as the queries being searched for. It can be tempting for marketers to optimize results for shorter queries and ignore the long tail, but how much traffic is overlooked this way? And how does the quality of that traffic impact its relevance? Data provided by advertising network Chitika shows the correlation between query length and ad performance, looking at user engagement as well as the volume of traffic on a given site. In the image below, you can see the relationship between query length by character count and raw impression volume: As might be expected, the data shows that a majority of search engine queries are shorter. The remaining 25% is comprised of longer queries, with a steep decline in volume the more verbose the … [Read more...] about The Long Tail Effect: Why Word Count Matters In Search Query Optimization
A new term popped up recently, and it’s a dangerous one for marketers. Kellyanne Conway, counselor to our new president, introduced us to the term “alternative facts” just days after his inauguration. And because I’m a child of the ’80s and ’90s, I’ve learned things from presidents and first ladies of the past: I’ll always “Just say no” as Nancy Reagan taught us in elementary school. We’ve all seen marketing claims that we felt were seriously overstated, and it’s important that we don’t allow those types of practices to thrive in today’s content marketing era. It’s our duty to be honest about what the … [Read more...] about Don’t risk your business and consumer relationship over ‘alternative facts’

High keyword rankings are the most sought-after achievement in the world of search engine optimization (SEO). Small businesses and brands alike strive to obtain the first organic listing in search results because of the lucrative traffic and lead opportunities that are associated with this position. But with the evolution of paid advertising and expansion of universal search, as well as Google’s continuous efforts to provide consumers with content that resolves their demands directly in search results, the opportunities attached to traditional keyword rankings are diminishing at an alarming rate. In today’s search landscape, SEOs and digital marketing specialists have to consider whether it’s worth the amount of time and resources it takes to achieve premier organic rankings, considering the click-through rates (CTR) associated with organic rankings that are positioned under PLAs, local results and other forms of content. Keyword rankings aren’t the only way to … [Read more...] about Do organic keyword rankings matter anymore?
